Matt Pond PA
An East Coast indie rock institution, Matt Pond PA has served as the creative outlet for its namesake singer/songwriter since the late '90s, releasing over a dozen albums and cycling through at least twice as many contributing members. Pond launched his group in Philadelphia, releasing a series of scrappy chamber pop albums before moving to Brooklyn in the mid-2000s and rebooting the lineup. Their sound continued to develop throughout the decade, merging jangly indie rock with folk-rock and orchestral touches on highlights like 2004's Emblems and 2007's Last Night, which placed on two different charts. During the recording of 2010's The Dark Leaves, producer/guitarist Chris Hansen joined the group and has remained Pond's primary collaborator ever since. A brief solo stint yielded 2013's The Lives Inside the Lines in Your Hand, Pond's only record billed under his own name, after which the "PA" was re-added for 2015's standout The State of Gold. Following a 2023 release as the Natural Lines, Matt Pond PA was again revived for the 2024 EP Call and Response, a collaboration with Alexa Rose.
Pond first formed the group upon relocating from New England to Philadelphia, and he filled out his inaugural lineup with guitarist/bassist Josh Kramer, cellist Jim Hostetter, violinist Rosie McNamara-Jones, and drummer Sean Byrne. The band debuted in 1998 with Deer Apartments and won top honors in an unsigned bands competition sponsored by online retailer CDNOW. Their reputation grew with 2000's Measure, which earned enough acclaim to help Pond net a deal with Polyvinyl. With cellist Hostetter the only holdover, Pond again retooled the band's lineup for The Green Fury and The Nature of Maps, two albums released nine months apart in 2002.
In 2003, Pond relocated to Brooklyn and began piecing together another strong lineup. Brian Pearl (guitars/piano), Dan Crowell (drums), and Daniel Mitha (bass) joined Pond for the recording of Emblems, which was released on Altitude in May 2004. Prior to releasing their fifth full-length, the band issued a the seasonal Winter Songs EP with its fan favorite "Snow Day." The song's use in a Starbuck's commercial boosted Matt Pond PA's national presence ahead of 2005's Several Arrows Later which marked the debut of cellist Dana Feder. Tour dates with Liz Phair and Guster also coincided with its release. A limited-run EP, If You Want Blood, was released the following summer, and the band returned with a new full-length album, Last Light, in September 2007. It marked a new peak for the band in terms of popularity, climbing onto Billboard's Independent and Heatseekers charts.
For his next album, Pond again changed the lineup, recording in a cabin outside of Bearsville, New York, with producer Chris Hansen and several guest musicians. The result, The Dark Leaves, was released in 2010, and additional material from those cabin sessions found its way onto several EPs, including the digital release Auri Sacra Fames. After fronting the band he shared a name with for over a decade, Pond dropped the "PA" from in late 2012. Working again with collaborator Chris Hansen, he recorded the first album to be issued under his own name, The Lives Inside the Lines in Your Hand, released by BMG in early 2013. The band took to the road shortly afterwards, performing a ten-year anniversary tour in support of the album Emblems, playing the album in its entirety. Coinciding with the tour, the band successfully appealed for funding for their next album, and The State of Gold was released in 2015 with the PA added back into the band name. That album's robust, shimmering pop production was scaled back somewhat on their 2016 follow-up, Winter Lives, which included a few more acoustic-oriented offerings. In 2017, after nearly two decades operating as an ensemble, Matt Pond PA released Still Summer, with the intent of retiring the band's name.
Over the next few years, occasional releases still appeared under the band's name including the 2020 rarities compilation, A Collection of Bees, Pt. 1, and a resequenced version of their 2015 album, The State of Gold. With the launch of 2023's, the Natural Lines and its self-titled debut, it appeared to be the end of the road for Matt Pond PA, but again the name stuck and within a year, the group had returned, releasing a collaborative EP, Call and Response, with West Virginia singer/songwriter Alexa Rose.
