Vienna Vienna

Hailing from California, Vienna Vienna deems his bright, partially dissonant and cathartic take on alternative music "glimmer rock." Known as J when not performing under his musical moniker, the person behind Vienna Vienna was born James Barre in Fresno, California. His music came from a desire to live authentically after a formative youth spent in religious communities where he could not openly embrace his queer identity. The need to live honestly and connect with others through musical catharsis informed his performing ethos, which he calls "glimmer rock." His taut, catchy debut single, "Blame It on Us," released in 2021, was a fine example of this mindset -- a broadside against the feeling of younger generations being saddled with the problems of their ancestors, with an uplifting chorus to match. It would touch a nerve with fans on social media, gaining several million streams. Barre didn't re-emerge as Vienna Vienna until 2024, issuing a spate of arresting singles including the Jeff Buckley-esque "Beauty Queen" and the nervy numbers "F**k Me" and "Best of Me." Around this time, several of his demos made their way into the hands of Fall Out Boy bassist/songwriter Pete Wentz, who favorably compared them to the early works of Panic! At the Disco. Vienna Vienna's Wonderland EP, featuring Barre's hookiest material yet -- including "Vienna (Everything's Fine)" and the previously released "Beauty Queen" -- was issued that year on Wentz's DCD2 label.
