High Valley

Canadian pop-country brothers duo High Valley have risen from a remote Alberta farm town to become a major-label success with a string of hit singles and albums that split the difference between their rural acoustic roots and slick contemporary country. Initially a trio consisting of brothers Brad, Curtis, and Bryan Rempel, the band's earlier releases had a strong faith-driven streak thanks to their Mennonite upbringing. Slimming down to a duo in 2014, Brad and Curtis were able to turn High Valley into a breakout band, delivering a clutch of hit singles and earning a contract with Atlantic, which released their major-label debut, Dear Life, in 2016. Amid hits like "She's with Me" and "Single Man," the brothers continued to honor their bluegrass and gospel heritage by recording acoustic versions of many of their songs. Following their chart-topping 2020 EP, Grew Up on That, High Valley issued their sixth album, Way Back, in 2022. The Rempel brothers grew up on a farm in the small Mennonite community of La Crete, Alberta, where it seemed there was always a lot of country music being played, and the brothers quickly absorbed it, forming High Valley before they were even teenagers. The young band played wherever they could, often at church camps, and eventually worked their way up to open for country stars who toured through, all while still attending school and holding down part-time jobs. An engaging mix of bluegrass roots, faith-based material, and contemporary country, they released their debut album, Broken Borders, in 2007. That LP went on to earn the Album of the Year award at the GMA Canada Covenant Awards, while the single "Back to You" brought them Country Song of the Year. The group's eponymous second studio album, issued in 2010, took home five Covenants, and in 2012 they released album number three, Love Is a Long Road, via Open Road Recordings. It would prove to be their last with Bryan, who soon left the group to spend more time with his family. Carrying on as a duo, Brad and Curtis issued County Line in 2014, which proved to be their commercial breakthrough behind the singles "Rescue You," "County Line," "Make You Mine," and "She's with Me." It was enough to get them a deal with Atlantic and, in November 2016, High Valley made their major-label debut with Dear Life. The album performed respectably on both the Canadian Albums chart and the Billboard Country chart, yielding the hits, "Make You Mine" and "She's with Me." Two years later, High Valley took put a rustic spin on seven tracks from Dear Life, stripping them down to acoustic versions on 2018's Farmhouse Sessions. Their success continued, first with 2019's non-album single "Single Man," followed in early 2020 by the chart-topping "Grew Up on That" from their EP of the same name. 2021's "Whatever It Takes" was also a major hit and heralded their next full-length, Way Back, which appeared in May 2022.
