Bathe

Brooklyn duo Bathe make hypnotic indie soul they dubbed "surf R&B," blending woozy psychedelic guitar riffs and ambient textures, as well as drawing inspiration from their Cuban and Afro-Caribbean backgrounds. Rising out of a vibrant N.Y.C. community of genre-defying Black performers, they first garnered buzz with their 2019 EP I'll Miss You before gaining wider attention with 2021's Bicoastal. In 2024, they released Inside Voice(s): Side A, the first half of a two-part project. Formed in 2018, Bathe features singer/songwriter Devin Hobdy and guitarist/songwriter Corey Smith-West. Prior to meeting, Hobdy grew up in Queens with his jazz musician mother and attended an arts high school where he studied opera. Conversely, Smith-West was raised in a family who had immigrated from Jamaica, where his grandfather was a blues guitarist. They initially met while students at the University of Pennsylvania, communing over their shared love for artists like Blood Orange, Frank Ocean, Toro y Moi, Beach House, and other left-of-center R&B and indie performers. By 2016, they were collaborating with singer Ivy Sole in the psychedelic neo-soul collective Indigold. Following the end of that project, they continued as Bathe and began posting tracks online, including 2018's "Sure Shot." The song went viral, paving the way for the release of their debut EP, 2019's I'll Miss You. They returned in 2021 with their second EP, Bicoastal. With 2024's Inside Voice(s): Side A, Bathe debuted the first half of a companion two-EP release. Included on Side A were contemplative songs like "Avalon" and "Fields," a vibe the duo promised to contrast on the darker Side B.
