The Veils

Led by enigmatic frontman Finn Andrews, the Veils built their reputation on a blend of mercurial, witching-hour sonics and soulful rock songwriting. The English-born, New Zealand-raised Andrews was still in his teens when he signed to Rough Trade, and he led the Veils through a trio of albums during their first decade, including the 2006 highlight Nux Vomica. On-stage they presented a fierce live act, while in the studio the band's music became increasingly textured and atmospheric, leading to prominent film and television placements with auteurs like Tim Burton and David Lynch. Following 2016's Total Depravity, Andrews released a solo album and continued touring on his own. Battling through injury and a series of life changes, he reconvened the Veils for 2023's double album …And Out of the Void Came Love and 2025's Asphodels. The son of former XTC and Shriekback member Barry Andrews, Finn Andrews was born in London but spent his formative years in New Zealand. Immersed in music for virtually his whole life, Andrews came up through Auckland's folk scene, playing in local bands and writing many of the songs that would end up on his group's first album. Label interest in the U.K. prompted him to move back to London in 2001, and there he formed the first iteration of the Veils. Championed by Rough Trade's Geoff Travis, they were quickly signed to the Blanco y Negro imprint and released a handful of singles over the next two years. Creative friction between Travis and Blanco y Negro's parent company Warner Bros. resulted in the Veils moving to Rough Trade proper for their 2004 debut. The Runaway Found featured production from Suede's Bernard Butler and earned critical praise upon its release, though disagreements with his then-bandmates caused Andrews to dissolve the original lineup. While various Veils members would come and go over the years, a consistent rhythm section formed around Kiwi bassist Sophia Burn and English drummer Henning Dietz, who first appeared on 2006's Nux Vomica. Recorded in Los Angeles by Nick Cave producer Nick Launay, the album featured a moodier, more dynamic sound aided by string sections and a late-night patina that would become a hallmark of the Veils' sound. A lengthy international tour followed before the release of 2009's Sun Gangs, their third and final album for Rough Trade. For their next outing, the 2011 EP Troubles of the Brain, the band formed their own label, Pitch Beast, which also released their fourth LP, Time Stays, We Go, as well as a live EP captured at Abbey Road Studios, both in 2013. The group's cinematic sound led to several film placements, including one for the song "Another Night on Earth" in Tim Burton's Frankenweenie. Moving into a darker sonic space, the Veils experimented on their fifth album, working with producers El-P, Adam Greenspan, and Dean Hurley. Teeming with morose themes and eerie details, 2016's Total Depravity came out on the Nettwerk label and led to Andrews performing in a 2017 episode of David Lynch's Twin Peaks revival. After this, the singer/songwriter tried his hand at a proper solo album, releasing One Piece at a Time in early 2019. While touring his solo album, an impassioned Andrews broke his wrist during a performance and soldiered on with the injury for the remainder of the tour, doing further harm to the fracture. A difficult convalescence coincided with the quarantines of the 2020 pandemic while Andrews tried to write new songs using only one hand. After a series of setbacks and the birth of his daughter, he broke through with a surplus of new material that took a more hopeful tone. Reviving the Veils, he and producer Tom Healy divided their efforts into two halves, creating the 2023 double album …And Out of the Void Came Love. 2025's Asphodels was cut live to tape at Auckland's Roundhead Studios and featured the string arrangements of Victoria Kelly.
