A highly energized immediacy typifies the output of Staten Island's CJ. The rapper made his commercial breakthrough in 2020 with "Whoopty," a brash, Brooklyn drill-inspired track that became a Top Ten pop hit the following February. The single anchored Loyalty Over Royalty (2021), CJ's debut EP, and led to featured appearances on tracks with the likes of El Alfa and Farruko. Subsequent collaborations with DJ Drama and SiAngie Twins, and headlining singles such as "Gangsta" (2023), have followed since then. Christopher Daniel Soriano started rapping in his teens and was uploading music under his stage name before he turned 20. He gained some attention in 2018 with "Pop," featuring 6ix9ine, and made another advancement in 2019 with the more melodic "Understood." "Whoopty," inspired by the Brooklyn drill scene -- more specifically that scene's Pop Smoke -- followed in 2020. Originally released independently, it was picked up by major-label Warner and reached the Billboard Hot 100 that November, by which point CJ was featured on a remix of Busta Rhymes' "Czar." Three months later, "Whoopty" peaked at number ten in the U.S. -- having gone Top Ten in the U.K. and Belgium as well -- and CJ offered the eight-track Loyalty Over Royalty EP, containing "Whoopty" and another well-received single, "BOP." A couple additional singles, as well as collaborations with El Alfa ("La Mamá de la Mamá"), Funk Flex ("You Know"), and Farruko ("Love 66"), were out before the end of 2021. CJ's 2022 wasn't as much of a whirlwind, though he struck a new deal with AWAL Recordings and issued "Dubai." In 2023, he teamed with DJ Drama for "Big Dog Status," and with SiAngie Twins for "L.O.V.E.," and between those tracks released the reflective and assertive "Gangsta."
