Brothers of Metal

A grand-scale fusion of metal, folk, rock, and pop, Brothers of Metal are a Swedish band whose massed vocals and guitars set the stage for an over-the-top celebration of heroic legend and folklore. Clad in leather and furs like cave dwellers in a primitive Scandinavian land, Brothers of Metal may harken back to the Bronze age in their mythos and visual style, but their music comes from a time when electricity was commonplace, with three electric guitars leading the charge along with three vocalists (some melodic, some distorted), a bassist, a drummer, and occasional keyboard and orchestral interludes. The group was first embraced by the international metal community with the release of their debut album, 2017's Prophecy of Ragnarök, a testimonial to their over-the-top sound and vision, and they continued to invoke Odin and crank their amps on 2019's Emblas Saga and 2024's Fimbulvinter. Declaring their sound "true metal," Brothers of Metal got their start in 2012 when a few metal fans, emboldened by alcoholic beverages, decided to write a song inspired by pioneering power metal band Manowar. With a home recording setup on hand, they had completed a track called "Son of Odin" by the time the sun rose. Some of the participants in the project had been in a melodic death metal band called Temporary that had recently broken up, and when Temporary was offered a gig, they persuaded the venue to book Brothers of Metal instead. Playing a show proved difficult with just one song, so they started writing more material, and in time grew into an eight-piece lineup with their own fictive backstory as lost warriors who somehow found themselves in the 21st century (one of their social media pages still credits Odin as their manager), playing occasional shows and working on an album as time permitted. In 2017, Brothers of Metal self-released their debut album, Prophecy of Ragnarök, in digital form, and while they had no particular marketing clout, the album came to the attention of AFM Records, a German label that specializes in international metal and hard rock acts. AFM signed Brothers of Metal -- by this time featuring vocalists Ylva Eriksson ("Voice of the Valkyries"), Joakim Lindbäck Eriksson ("Battle Cries"), and Mats Nilsson ("Tongue of the Gods"), guitarists Dawid Grahn, Pähr Nilsson, and Mikael Fehrm, bassist Emil Wärmedal, and drummer and percussionist Johan Johansson -- and gave Prophecy of Ragnarök a repackaged reissue on CD and vinyl. The group's oversized sound, and the music videos they produced to give their sound an image to match, soon earned them a cult following, and in late 2019 they brought out their second album, Emblas Saga. The group set out on a European tour in support of the album in January 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic closed concert venues around the world, and Brothers of Metal instead promoted the LP with a series of music videos. In March 2022, the group played their first concert in over two years, and set out on an extensive U.K. tour, as well as appearing at the prestigious German heavy metal festival Wacken Open Air. The group began work on their third album in 2023, and the first single from the upcoming LP, "Heavy Metal Viking," was issued in June 2024. Brothers of Metal's third full-length release, Fimbulvinter, arrived in November 2024. It was their final project with Mikael Fehrm, who in August 2023 released a statement that he was retiring due to a severe and lasting case of tinnitus.
