D'eon
The output of the Dartmouth, Nova Scotia native Chris d'Eon provokes comparisons and references to vintage new age and contemporary experimental electronic artists, '80s mainstream pop, throwback house, classical music, and left-of-center R&B. The study of Arabic, Iranian, and Turkish music also informed his output. His early efforts include a split EP with Grimes, the conceptual LP, and a series of Music for Keyboards mixtapes. 2015's Foxconn: Trios mutated footwork, jungle, and trap. Subsequent albums like 2024's Leviathan have featured Baroque and modern classical-style compositions.
A producer and singer who based himself in Montreal, Quebec, d'Eon released some cassettes, including the hour-long Wa Al-'Asr and a four-song set of Swans covers, prior to making his Hippos in Tanks debut with Palinopsia (2010). He and Grimes then shared Darkbloom (2011), a split release shared between Hippos in Tanks and Arbutus. On LP (2012), an unapologetically sprawling release, d'Eon indulged in all his whims to create a modern "What if?" concept album regarding the angel Gabriel. He also released a series of Music for Keyboard mixtapes, the second of which consisted of variations on Blink-182's "What's My Age Again?" He debuted his jungle side project Kallisti with the 2013 release Arc of Fire. The 2015 d'Eon release Foxconn: Trios continued in a glitchy, deconstructed dance direction. Patriot, a hardvapour album credited to Eva Weishaupt, appeared in 2016.
Following a hiatus, d'Eon returned in 2019 with Six Trios and Music for Keyboards Vol. VI, as well as released by side projects D. Jung and Kallisti. The Christianity-themed From the Root of Jesse Sprouts a Splendid Flower appeared in 2020. Four Trios, Bijoux, and Rhododendron were all released in 2021, the last of which surfaced on Hausu Mountain and sported a Baroque classical-influenced style. 2024's Leviathan continued with this sound.
