Garo

Garo was a Japanese acoustic rock band active from 1970 to 1976. The group was a trio consisting of Mark Horiuchi, Tommy Hidaka, and Masumi "Vocal" Ohno. They were famous for bringing a unique blend of harmony vocals and acoustic guitar to the Japanese music scene, showcasing the influence of Western folk-rock groups such as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The band formed in 1970 and quickly gained attention with their distinctive sound, displayed on their first single "Tanpopo," released in 1971. Garo's breakthrough came in 1973 with their single "Gakuseigai-no-Kissaten," which reached number 1 on the Japanese Oricon charts. This success was followed by other chart-topping singles such as "Utsukushisugite" and "Romansu." As years went by, Garo built an impressive repertoire consisting of popular songs including "Namidahairanai" and "Bītoruzu wa mō kikanai." Thanks to live performances and hit records, their popularity peaked between 1973 and 1974. However, the band faced internal musical differences, leading to their 1976 breakup. Garo left a lasting legacy in the Japanese music scene, and their work was the focus of several retrospective compilations such as the 11 CD/DVD box set GARO BOX (2006) as well as the compilation album Singles & Origins (2024), which reached number 82 on the Japanese Top 100.
