Haste The Day
A metalcore band from Indiana, Haste the Day fuse aggressive riffs and a harsh/clean vocal attack with strong melodic elements and Christian themes. Since the mid-2000s, they have been a staple of Tooth & Nail's Solid State imprint and their albums have regularly made the Christian Top Five while crossing over onto the Billboard 200 and various other charts. During their initial run, they endured a number of personnel shifts and, following 2010's Attack of the Wolf King, disbanded for several years. A 2015 reunion tour and album, Coward, combined members from each of the band's eras. After another lengthy hiatus, Haste the Day re-formed in 2024 and released the single "Burn."
Haste the Day formed in 2001 in the Indianapolis suburb of Carmel. Guitarist/vocalist Brennan Chaulk, his brother drummer Devin, and bassist/vocalist Mike Murphy originally gigged as a three-piece, but six months after the group's inception they added longtime friend Jason Barnes as a second guitarist, and after a series of auditions, named Jimmy Ryan their lead vocalist. After self-releasing That They May Know You in 2002, Haste the Day signed to the Tooth & Nail label's Solid State subsidiary to issue their breakthrough LP, Burning Bridges, in the spring of 2004. They spent the year on shows with bands like As I Lay Dying and Zao, and their next album, When Everything Falls, appeared the following summer. In late 2005, Ryan announced his pending marriage and quit the band, playing his last show with them that December. A few months later, the remaining members of Haste the Day added new vocalist Stephen Keech, formerly of New Day Awakening. Pressure the Hinges arrived in March 2007, and reached number three on the Christian Albums chart while making it to 89 on the Billboard 200. Their four set, 2008's Dreamer, fared even better, reaching 68 on the main chart. It was also their first not to feature guitarist Jason Barnes. Devin Chaulk left the band after its release. Next, they headed into the studio with producer Andreas Magnusson (who also produced albums for the Black Dahlia Murder and Sleeper) and began working on new material. The result was Haste the Day's fifth studio album, Attack of the Wolf King, which was which reached multiple charts upon its 2010 release.
The frequent personnel turnover and heavy touring schedule finally took its toll, and in 2011, the band announced their official breakup and embarked on a farewell tour. Later that year a live album called Haste the Day vs. Haste the Day was released, and it featured both the original lineup and the final one performing together at a 2010 show in Bloomington, Indiana. After a three-year break, Haste the Day reunited, this time featuring members from both the early and later lineups with vocalist Stephen Keech set to produce their new album. Coward, the band's sixth studio album and first since their breakup, arrived in May 2015 and featured both Keech and original singer Ryan sharing vocals. Despite the album's success, Haste the Day again went into hiatus and remained so until 2023 when they reunited to play a set at Alabama's Furnace Fest. By this point, the band consisted of Brennan Chaulk, Mike Murphy, Stephen Keech, Dave Krysl, Scott Whalen, and Giuseppe Capolupo; they went into the studio and released the single "Burn" in October 2024.
