Matt Hansen

Working on the continuum of pop’s most heart-on-sleeve male singers of the past few decades, Matt Hansen's songs speak to the lovelorn; they're dramatic and dynamic in equal amounts. Born in San Rafael, California in 2000, Hansen -- a shy kid whose parents coaxed him out of his shell by encouraging him to try theater in school -- studied ethnomusicology at UCLA and kept himself entertained by covering his favorite types of pop songs on social media: emotive, sensitive tracks by pop/rock acts known for filling arenas. Unexpectedly, his takes on tracks like Coldplay's “Yellow” and the Goo Goo Dolls' “Iris” found a big audience; soon, Hansen started testing the waters with his own compositions and fans were just as engaged. His lyrics found favor with the young and lovestruck and his songs were anchored by folky guitars, delicate piano, and thunderous drums on the singalong choruses, which Hansen sings with a yearning rasp. With songs like 2022’s “Better Off Without Me” and 2023’s “Let Em Go” and “Something to Remember” reaching streaming totals in the high millions, Hansen next was able to start testing his songs on the road, opening for acts like Teddy Swims, Lauv, and Alec Benjamin and playing well-received slots at festivals like Outside Lands and Lollapalooza.
