Alex Harris
Alex Harris' confident style recalls the great soul shouters of the ‘60s and the smooth neo-soul vocalists of the ‘90s in equal measure. A youth gospel singer who put his career on pause to pursue an education, he found his way back to show business, performing for diverse audiences and building a fan base with material leading up to his 2024 debut album Back to Us.
The middle of eight children born to a pastor father and a teacher mother in Georgia, Harris made his singing debut at the age of seven as the lead singer of a family group he formed with his brothers. Originally called The A Boys (for the letter all their names begin with) and later named A7, the group toured churches and worship houses across the Southeast. Harris briefly left the music business to pursue multiple college degrees -- a bachelor’s in psychology from LaGrange College, a master’s in theology and social work from Boston University, and a doctorate in organizational leadership at Nova Southeastern, along with some grad studies in adolescent counseling at Harvard -- but soon found himself drawn back as an in-demand live singer and songwriter. He performed at Barack Obama and Joe Biden's presidential galas and spent time at songwriting sessions in Nashville with legendary Booker T. & the MG’s guitarist Steve Cropper.
In 2019, Harris released his first single, “Make It Better,” co-written and produced with his brother David “Swagg R’Celious” Harris, an early collaborator with H.E.R. His Frequency EP, released in 2020, featured the fan favorite “Falling for You.” Debut album Back to Us, released by the Shanachie label in 2024, kept things moving in a more vintage direction, with covers of Solomon Burke (“Cry to Me”) and Otis Redding (“I’ve Got Dreams to Remember”), plus collaborations with the soul group Monophonics on the track “Lose My Religion.”
