Asake

Asake is an internationally successful and acclaimed Nigerian artist blending Afrobeats and amapiano. The singer found breakout success in 2020 with "Lady," an indelibly sunny track with a brisk beat and good-time vibes. Over the next two years, he built on his popularity with further hits like "Mr. Money" and 2022's high-profile Olamide collaboration "Omo Ope." His first two albums, Mr. Money with the Vibe (2022) and Work of Art (2023), reached the top half of the Billboard 200. After receiving a Grammy nomination, Asake returned in 2024 with his third album, Lungu Boy, which included high-profile guests like rappers Travis Scott and Stormzy. Born and raised in Lagos State, Ahmed Ololade Asake studied theater and performing arts at Obafemi Awolowo University and was initially focused on dance. He began releasing music around 2018, blending bright Afrobeat rhythms with his own mix of singing and nimble freestyling. After developing his sound over early singles like "Ayeeza" and "Kanipe," he released "Lady" in 2020, which effectively launched his career. Nods from more-established tastemakers like Broda Shaggi and Tunde Ednut helped extend the song's reach, and he followed with "Mr. Money," which became one of his signature songs. 2021's "Don't Hype Me" and "Yan Yan" helped build anticipation for Ololade Asake, his 2022 debut EP. The EP's lead single "Omo Ope" featured Nigerian superstar Olamide and subsequently became Asake's biggest hit. All of this built up to the September release of Mr. Money with the Vibe, the singer's debut album. An eclectic and wide-ranging mix of styles that included Afrobeats, Fuji, classical elements, and plenty of glowing pop, the album brought Asake further success in the U.S., hitting number 66 on the Billboard pop chart. He followed the album with the Tiwa Savage collaboration "Loaded" and the 2023 singles "Yoga" and "2:30," which lead into his 2023 album, Work of Art. The album also hit number 66 on the Billboard 200, and the single "Amapiano" (with Olamide) received a nomination for Best African Music Performance at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards. The characteristically upbeat single "Only Me" appeared in early 2024 followed a few months later by the Central Cee collaboration "Wave." The latter song kicked off the album cycle for Asake's third LP, Lungu Boy, released in August. With production from longtime foil Magicsticks, along with Mike Dean and P.Priime, Lungu Boy's biographical lyrics made it something of an origin tale, detailing the singer's rapid rise from the streets of Lagos to international fame. A Top 20 hit in the U.K., it peaked at 115 in the U.S. and featured guests like Stormzy, Travis Scott, and Wizkid.
