Oneda

OneDa is a Nigerian-British rapper equally comfortable delivering her empowering lyrics over drum'n'bass, Afrobeats, and trap rhythms. Using hip-hop as a therapeutic tool, she commits herself to uplifting female and non-binary voices as the founder of the rap community HERchester. She gained attention with the release of solo efforts like 2020's OneDa Land EP, as well as collaborations with drum'n'bass producers like Sam Binga, Dub Phizix, and Vibe Chemistry. She later began producing her own tracks, and in 2024, she issued her debut album, Formula OneDa. Born and raised in Manchester, OneDa played trumpet in a brass band as a student. She gravitated toward hip-hop, and eventually bass music, and gradually concentrated on being a rapper rather than playing an instrument. She won a contest called Urban Superstars when she was 17, and she formed the duo Batz Inda Belfry with another female rapper from Manchester, Envy. They received BBC Radio 1 airplay and support from Tinie Tempah, in addition to winning the City Life Best Breakthrough Act award in 2015. However, the duo dissolved, and OneDa concentrated on social work and her solo career. Around 2018, soon after she had her daughter, she came out as gay, and spent a brief period living in her car before things began working out in her professional life. She released the EP Freestyle Fridays, and joined a hip-hop crew called the Mouse Outfit. She continued releasing material, including the 2020 EP OneDa Land and numerous singles, as well as collaborations with garage and drum'n'bass producers including Zed Bias and Sam Binga. In 2023, OneDa signed to esteemed indie label Heavenly and appeared on the song "Burnt Pictures" by audiobooks, and issued the double single "Warriors Daughter"/"Rollin'," respectively collaborating with Mr. Scruff and Factory Floor's Gabe Gurnsey. She also released the EP Pussy Power, guested on "Moss Side Fish Fry" by Steve Mason (formerly of the Beta Band), and toured with Irish hip-hop group Kneecap. Having founded the HERchester community three years earlier, OneDa headlined Manchester Pride in 2023. Formula OneDa, the rapper's self-produced debut full-length, arrived in 2024, with tracks ranging from Afro-trap to drum'n'bass.
