Rayana Jay

With her velvety vocals and colorful storytelling, independent singer/songwriter Rayana Jay imbues her contemporary R&B songs with the spirit of an old soul, bridging the gap between contemporaries such as SZA and Solange and major influences like Anita Baker and Amy Winehouse. Debuting in the late 2010s, she issued a trio of EPs before the end of the decade, and in 2022 issued her fourth extended play effort, Last Call, a refined showcase for her seductive ballads and strutting midtempo jams. Born in Richmond, California, Rayana was raised by her grandmother and mother, who worked at a record label. Introduced to Johnny "Guitar" Watson at a young age, she was also exposed to the Atlanta sounds of Organized Noize and OutKast. She began singing in the church youth choir as a child -- later becoming its director -- and started songwriting at 16. After interning for an Oakland radio show, she decided to pursue a career in music. Slowly rising on the Bay Area scene, Rayana issued her debut, Sorry About Last Night, in 2016. The set featured production by 1-O.A.K., Drew Banga, and Mikos the Gawd. The latter two returned the following year on sophomore effort Morning After, featuring "Everything," which was heard in an episode of Atlanta. Rayana's third EP, Love Me Like, arrived in 2019. Its title song, a collaboration with Duckwrth, was amplified with a placement in an episode of Bel-Air. From the rest of 2019 through 2021, Rayana offered a handful of singles alternating between stand-alone tracks and previews of her fourth EP. Those that gained the most traction included the ruminative "It's You" and woozy "Unfair." The latter highlighted the second half of 2022's Last Call EP.
