Walter The Producer

With a sound that channels Anderson .Paak, Steve Lacy, and late-period Daft Punk, Walter the Producer adds some soul and verve to the indie pop scene with his catchy, part-electronic originals as heard on 2023’s No Substance Mixtape and its viral hit “Velma.” His origins seem to be a closely guarded secret: press materials indicate his real name is “Reid” and he was born in Boston in the early 2000s. By age ten he’d learned to play guitar and piano; by 13, he’d jailbroken a copy of Logic Pro to experiment with beatmaking. After fitful attempts at collaborations from 2020 to 2022 under the moniker Reid Hosp -- a name stunningly similar to the former Washington, D.C. army medical facility -- his work as Walter the Producer came into full bloom in 2023 with the release of the single “Velma.” Featuring a hypnotic drum loop, spiky guitar chords, and a keen falsetto vocal, the track blew up on social media Its follow-up, “Since September,” armed with a quirky music video, fared even better. Those tracks featured on Walter's full-length debut, No Substance Mixtape. A spate of non-album singles followed in 2023 and 2024, including “PAMPLEMOUSSE” and “NOW WE’RE GETTING THERE,” which later appeared on his 2024 EP Please Help Me, Pt. 1.
