Benjy Ferree
Benjy Ferree spent time in Los Angeles trying his hand at acting before returning to the D.C. area (he's from Maryland), and his time there informed his 2006 debut, LEAVING THE NEST. His barn-burning songs, full of vivid character sketches along with poignant self-confession, are filled out with the help of musicians from bands like Garland of Hours and the Aquarium. COME BACK TO THE FIVE AND DIME, BOBBY DEE BOBBY DEE, is nominally a tribute to child star Bobby Driscoll, best known for voicing Disney's Peter Pan before being discarded by Hollywood and dying penniless at 31. It's Driscoll's youthful spark, though, that seems to inhabit Ferree's music--a jaunty blend of rock, bluegrass, gospel, and a Broadway-like flair for the theatrical.
