Formed in Japan in 2004, Golden Bomber is a visual kei band founded by vocalist Shō Kiryūin and guitarist Yutaka Kyan. Known for their theatrical performances, the group is referred to as an ‘air band’ since only the vocals are performed live during their shows and the rest of the band members are performers and will mime their instruments on stage. In keeping with the ‘air band’ concept, all of the band’s recordings feature professional musicians working with vocalist Shō Kiryūin. Golden Bomber’s debut album, Ongaku ga bokura wo dame ni suru, was released in 2006 and was followed by two albums released in December 2007: The Golden J-Pops and Ren’ai Shuukyouron. In early 2009, they issued the album Imitation Gold ~Kinbaku no Meikyoku Niban Shibori~, featured parodies of top Japanese hits, which was a concept that went well with Golden Bomber’s outrageous live shows. The group’s popularity began to grow by the release of Sorinokoshita Natsu in July 2009, and they released several collections to capitalize on their popularity: Golden Best ~Pressure~ (2010) and Golden Best ~Brassiere~ (2010). Continuing their compilation campaign with greater results, Golden Hour ~ Kamihanki Best 2010~ reached Number 1 on the Japanese Albums chart followed by Golden Hour ~ Shimonanki Best 2010~, which reached Number 3. By the end of 2010, the group were being courted by many different major labels but decided to release their albums independently. They released the Number 2-charting Golden Album in 2012 and quickly followed it with The Golden Best, which was released in several different countries including the US, Korea, Germany, and the UK. Golden Bomber’s 2015 album, No Music No Weapon, hit Number 1 on the Japanese Albums chart. While the band continued to release a string of singles between 2016 and 2022, they didn’t return with an album until the release of Compact Disc (2023), which rose to Number 5 on the albums chart.
