Michael Vincent Waller

Michael Vincent Waller is an American composer without limits to his approach to genre, style, or presentation. The playful chamber music and ambient piano pieces explored on albums like 2019's Moments took a sharp left turn with the release of 2021's Classic$, a record that paired Waller's classically informed compositions with trap beats and bars from rappers like Valee and Duke Deuce. A student of LaMonte Young, Marian Zazeela, and Bunita Marcus, Waller belongs to the generation of postminimalist composers who have absorbed the techniques and procedures of the avant-garde, yet he has moved on to find fresh resources in the use of Greek modes, traditional counterpoint, and the influences of impressionism, gamelan, pandiatonicism, and postmodernism. Waller's chamber music has been performed by the S.E.M. Ensemble, members of the FLUX Quartet, and the Dedalus Ensemble, and his keyboard works have been played by pianists Nicolas Horvath, Marija Ilic, Jenny Q Chai, and organist Carson Cooman. Waller also curates contemporary music programs in New York City, including the NewIdeas MusicSeries (2010-2012), in collaboration with Phill Niblock, Elliott Sharp, David First, and many others. After releasing a few minor efforts, Waller issued the expansive double album The South Shore on XL Recordings in 2015. He followed that release with 2017's Trajectories and 2019's Moments, exploring aspects of minimalism, ambience, and chamber music. In 2021, Waller released Classic$, an eight-track album that connected his classical compositions with trap beats and rap production, teaming with famed rap producer Lex Luger to deliver this uncommon combination of styles.
