Sandra Kolstad
A Norwegian composer, musician, producer, and author, Sandra Kolstad blends electronic and acoustic elements into epic pop songs rooted in dance and club culture. Lauded for her highly visual performances, Kolstad has toured internationally since emerging in 2009 and has released a string of acclaimed studio albums, including Crux (2011), Zero Gravity State of Mind (2014), San Silva (2017), and Burning Love (2019). She returned to her classical piano roots on her 2024 release Soft Hard. Kolstad is also a composer for the performing arts and has soundtracked new music to words by authors such as Anne Carson, Jon Fosse, Édouard Louis, and Athena Farrokhzad.
Kolstad studied music at Sandvika's Rud High School, ultimately releasing her debut EP, All That We Are, in 2009. Reflecting her background as a classically trained pianist, All That We Are's largely acoustic sound gave way to more electronic experimentation on her self-produced 2011 full-length debut, Crux, which incorporated samples of songs from Laurie Anderson and Fever Ray in its wide-ranging sound. In 2012, Kolstad was nominated as a new internationally breaking artist at Oslo's by:Larm festival. Later that year, she released her second album, (Nothing Lasts) Forever, which featured collaborations with Son of Light, Lucy Swann, and Bloksberg and was produced by Kolstad and Petter Eldh.
She recorded parts of her third album, Zero Gravity State of Mind, in Berlin. Released in Europe in 2014 and the U.S. in 2015, the LP saw Kolstad deliver an innovative set of pulsing, beat-driven electronic music. She continued to refine her forward-thinking electronic pop sound on 2017's cathartic San Silva, which focused on themes of justice, love, and hope. Two years later, she issued the like-minded Burning Love and Elv på Himmelen, the latter of which featured music set to 12 poems by Norwegian playwright Jon Fosse. Two Words for Destruction, her fiction debut, also appeared that year. 2023 saw the release of "Unlearning," the first single from her forthcoming classical piano-focused release, Soft Hard.
