Air Liquide
Not to be confused with the international chemical company of the same name, the Germany-based duo of Cem Oral and Ingmar Koch (who go by the names Jammin' Unit and Dr. Walker, respectively) have been making hard-hitting acid and techno as Air Liquide since the early '90s. Recording first for their own Structure label group before signing with Rising High in 1993, the pair also recorded for the New York-based Sm:)e Communications (which issued 1994's double-CD The Increased Difficulty of Concentration and several 10" EPs), as well as in various side projects for labels such as DJungle Fever, Blue, and Oral's own Pharma imprint. On several releases, they have been joined by American singer, songwriter, and poet Mary S. Applegate. Although the pair have dabbled in everything from beatless ambient to back-breaking, nosebleed gabber, the bulk of their material has clustered around dirty, midtempo acid and breakbeat techno, with the focus on thick 303 lines and simple, minimal phrases. They've also increasingly moved to a more hip-hop-infused brand of caustic electro, as well as more accessible house tracks, with releases like 2004's Let Your Ears Be the Receiver! After several years of inactivity, Air Liquide reunited for performances and released the EP This Is a Mind Trip in 2018.
Koch got his start in the music industry pumping out house and hip-hop on the German Hype! and Technoline labels, before the latter went bankrupt in the early '90s. He then headed for university, studying electronic composition. It was then that Koch met Oral, a member of the same German underground scene that included Jörg Burger, Mike Ink, and Biochip C.'s Martin Damm. Together the group consolidated their efforts toward assembling the influential Structure label group, which included the Structure, Monotone, Blue, and DJungle Fever imprints. With releases running the spectrum from ambient, house, and techno to acid and hardcore, Koch and Oral's work together began to coalesce into a coherent sound reflecting shared influences such as Chicago acid, early New York hip-hop, and '70s prog experimentalists such as Neu! and Can.
Soon after Structure dissolved into the various labels and projects of its key participants, Walker and Jammin' Unit signed the Air Liquide name to the English Rising High label, through which they released a number of well-received full- and EP-length albums, including Nephology: The New Religion and Sonic Weather Machine. U.S.-based Sm:)e Communications issued 1994's double-CD The Increased Difficulty of Concentration as well as 1995's Red and mail-order companion disc Black. The duo also signed to EMI's Harvest imprint for the two-part Abuse Your Illusions, and remained with the label for 1999's Anybody Home? Air Liquide celebrated their tenth anniversary with X, issued by Proof! in 2001. The trip-hop-leaning Music Is a Virus appeared on Blue 2 in 2002, featuring Khan (Cem Oral's brother) and longtime collaborator Mary S. Applegate. Both also guested on 2004's Let Your Ears Be the Receiver! (Multicolor Recordings), Air Liquide's most accessible album.
The duo disbanded following Let Your Ears Be the Receiver!, and Oral concentrated on his mastering studio, Jammin Masters, while Koch formed the artist collective Liquid Sky Berlin. Air Liquide re-formed and resumed performing during the 2010s, and the EP This Is a Mind Trip was released by Intergalactic Research Institute for Sound in 2018.
