An influential figure in modern folk music, Gillian Welch writes songs that are rooted in rural Appalachian, country, and bluegrass traditions but timeless in their sense of craft and storytelling. Along with musical partner David Rawlings, she arrived amid the late-'90s roots scene with a voice and sensibility beyond her years and a pair of starkly beautiful albums in 1996's Revival and 1998's Hell Among the Yearlings. Bolstered by the popularity of the 2000 film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, on which she appeared, Welch and Rawlings launched their own label and released 2001's landmark Time (The Revelator), which put them at the forefront of a burgeoning folk revival. Subsequent albums like Soul Journey (2003) and 2011's critically lauded The Harrow & the Harvest cemented her place as one of 21st century folk music's most prominent artists. Known for their almost symbiotic close harmonies, the duo switched roles for several Rawlings-fronted releases, then officially billed themselves as a duo on 2021's Grammy-winning covers album All the Good Times (Are Past and Gone). Their 2024 album, Woodland, again credited to Welch and Rawlings, featured Welch's first original songs in 13 years.
Gillian Welch was born in Manhattan in 1967 and grew up in Los Angeles, where her parents worked as comedy writers for programs like The Carol Burnett Show. Early exposure to music by Bob Dylan, the Stanley Brothers, and the Carter Family nurtured a love of American folk traditions that she carried into adulthood. In the early '90s, Welch studied songwriting at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, where she joined the school's only country group and met fellow student David Rawlings. After graduation she moved to Nashville, where she and Rawlings began performing together as a duo, playing originals as well as traditional country and bluegrass songs. While opening for Peter Rowan in Nashville, they were spotted by musician and producer T-Bone Burnett, who helped Welch land a record deal with the newly launched Almo Records. With Burnett producing, they cut 1996's Revival, an album split between bare-bones duo performances and more full-bodied cuts featuring legendary session players like James Burton, Roy Huskey, Jr., and Buddy Harmon. Although she and Rawlings worked as a duo from the start, Revival and subsequent releases appeared under Welch's name. The album was nominated for Best Contemporary Folk album at the 1997 Grammy Awards.
Her sophomore album, 1998's dark-toned Hell Among the Yearlings, was also produced by Burnett and was her last for Almo. The years following her second release found Welch involved in several soundtracks (O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Songcatcher), tribute albums (Songs of Dwight Yoakam: Will Sing for Food, Return of the Grievous Angel: A Tribute to Gram Parsons), and guest spots on other artists' albums (Ryan Adams' Heartbreaker, Mark Knopfler's Sailing to Philadelphia). Following the success of O Brother (whose soundtrack Welch executive-produced), the duo found themselves in the center of a traditional American folk revival and released their third album, Time (The Revelator), in mid-2001. Produced by Rawlings at Nashville's famed RCA Studio B and released on their own Acony imprint, it was widely hailed by critics as a modern masterpiece and has since been considered one of the best albums of the decade. Together, she and Rawlings purchased an old Nashville recording studio called Woodland Sound and made their next record there. 2003's Soul Journey saw Welch experimenting with a more robust tonal palette, especially on the electric standout "Wrecking Ball."
During the years that followed, the two continued touring and in 2009 placed Rawlings' songs at the forefront on A Friend of a Friend which was credited to Dave Rawlings Machine. In this format, Welch became the accompanist and harmony singer to her partner's material. She didn't release another album under her own name again until 2011, when the two revived their classic duo format for The Harrow & The Harvest. It was an immediate critical success that earned almost universal acclaim and also charted well around the world, topping the U.S. folk chart. Two more Rawlings-led albums followed, one billed to Dave Rawlings Machine (2015's Nashville Obsolete) and one listed as solo (2017's Poor David's Almanack), though Welch was of course involved in both. With their own label, studio, and a growing vault of unreleased music, Welch and Rawlings launched an ongoing archival series that began with 2016's Boots No. 1: The Official Revival Bootleg. The early part of the COVID-19 pandemic was a productive, but tumultuous time for Welch. She and Rawlings recorded an intimate collection of American traditional material and cover songs which they released in July 2020 under the title All the Good Times (Are Past and Gone). It was the first album to be credited to each of them and it went on to win a Grammy Award for Best Folk Album. Around the same time, a tornado tore the roof off their studio, causing extensive damage. As repairs stretched on for the next several years, Welch and Rawlings both wrote material for a new album of originals which they recorded amid the studio rebuild. Again credited to both of them, 2024's Woodland was named after the studio and featured the first Welch originals since 2011.
