Clara La San

Clara La San's ruminative ballads and slow jams mix contemporary R&B and bedroom pop. A perfectionist, the Manchester, England-based singer/songwriter and producer pulled her Jam City-assisted Good Mourning mixtape -- featuring "Let You Go," her spare and hypnotic 2014 breakthrough -- within a couple years of its 2017 release. By the time she issued her equally heady and heartfelt 2024 debut album, Made Mistakes, La San had been intermittently active for a decade, and had collaborated with the select likes of Yves Tumor, Bicep, Gorgon City, and Bryson Tiller. La San, born Rosemary Claire Louise Francis, started uploading tracks while she was attending university. "Let You Go" attracted a SoundCloud following and industry interest, though she opted to maintain a shadowy profile, and continued building her fan base with the airier "In This Darkness." She picked up a co-writing credit on salute's 2016 track "One More Chance" (featuring DRAM), and the next year appeared on TD_Nasty's "Where U Wanna Be" and released Good Mourning, a mixtape that contained "Let You Go" and collaborations with producer Jam City. At the turn of the decade -- by which point Good Mourning was out of circulation -- La San branched out more by co-writing Yves Tumor's "Greater Love," which was followed by featured appearances on Bicep's "Saku," "X," and "Water," all of which she also co-wrote. In 2023, she picked up a writing credit on Gorgon City's "Voodoo," which charted in the U.K., and as her previous music became increasingly coveted, she arranged a digital distribution deal for her CLS Music label. In June 2024, after she co-wrote "Random Access Memory (RAM)" for Bryson Tiller's self-titled album, La San released the full-length Made Mistakes, which she produced with occasional assistance from Yves Rothman (Yves Tumor, Blondshell, Amaarae).
