Eliza Rose
East London's Eliza Rose is a longtime radio and club DJ as well as a playful yet swaggering vocalist and producer. She released a debut EP inspired by neo-soul and vocal jazz in 2015, but became more prominent as a recording artist during the early 2020s, when she began issuing singles with producers like Peaky Beats and Cody Currie. 2022's "B.O.T.A. (Baddest of Them All)," an empowering house anthem produced by Interplanetary Criminal, was initially released through Rose's own label, then picked up by Warner after it went viral and became a festival mainstay. The song then became the 1,400th number one hit in the U.K. and was certified platinum. She scored another hit with "Body Moving," her 2023 collaboration with Calvin Harris.
Eliza Rose started working at famed record store Flashback when she was 15. Heavily into soul, jazz, and disco, she began collecting records in order to DJ. She also sang and took music production courses, and her debut recording, The Moonshine EP, was released in 2015, featuring four originals and a T-Pain cover. She became part of the DJ collective Rhythm Sister, and began hosting radio shows on Rinse FM and Balamii, where she would spin vinyl sets focusing on funk, soul, and garage. Rose sang on the Peaky Beats single "Into the Night," which was released as a limited lathe cut in 2020. She issued additional tracks with Peaky Beats and Cody Currie in 2021, and established her own Rosebud Recordings, releasing the jazzy R&B songs "A Bloke Named Smokey" and "Mr. Showbiz" (both produced by Palmer Eldritch) as well as more club-focused remixes. The two-part Plant Lovers EP similarly included dubby downtempo as well as garage and jungle remixes.
In 2022, Rose and Dublin's M4A4 released the EP Shades of Red on Lobster Theremin. The solo single "Move to The" and Interplanetary Criminal collaboration "B.O.T.A. (Baddest of Them All)" were both released by Rosebud. "B.O.T.A." became a breakout track at the year's Glastonbury Festival and a viral hit on TikTok, then was licensed by Warner Records. It eventually became the first U.K. number one hit by a female DJ since Sonique's "Feel So Good" in 2000, and the 1,400th number one on the chart overall. The song also hit number one in Ireland for six weeks, and earned platinum certifications in the U.K. and Australia. It received a Brit Award nomination for Song of the Year, and Rose was additionally nominated for British Dance Act. Aside from her musical career, Rose wrote a novel titled What Happens in Dreamland.
She released the brisk garage single "Better Love" in February of 2023. She then released "Pleasure Peak" with house duo the Martinez Brothers, followed by the solo tune "Take You There." She returned to the U.K. Top 40 with "Body Moving," a collaboration with superstar producer Calvin Harris.
