Pressa

Toronto-born rapper Pressa is recognized for his gripping, streetwise narratives, which draw from his personal experiences. Though generations of personal tragedy could have kept him from finding success as a musician, Pressa's work has attracted fans, critics, and the city's most popular musician, Drake. Early mixtapes like 2017's Press Machine have been followed by collaborations with Lil Uzi Vert, Tory Lanez, Shy Glizzy, and others. The EP Gardner Express appeared in 2020, followed by a deluxe edition in 2021, and he's continued issuing singles like 2024's "War Ready" (with M24). Quinton Gardner was born to a Filipino mother and a Jamaican father in Toronto and was raised in the hardscrabble Driftwood region of the city's Jane and Finch neighborhood. He took on the moniker "Pressa" after his father Prestige, who began a 15-year jail sentence for murder when his son was only five weeks old. Pressa and his brother had their share of run-ins with the law; while incarcerated as a minor, he took to filling notebooks with lyrics, getting the feelings of the streets out of his head and onto the page. The death of his childhood friend -- shot dead by police while they were still in their teens -- inspired Pressa to assemble a posse cut, "Wass Gang," in honor of his old mate. More underground hits followed, including 2017's "Novacane," produced by fellow Torontonian Murda Beatz. By this point, Pressa's flow and lyrical content were starting to make waves beyond the local scene. Many in the industry took notice, most notably Drake, well established as Toronto's most popular hip-hop expert and, by then, an imperial force on singles and streaming charts. He recruited the upstart for several dates on a European tour that year, establishing Pressa as one to watch. That same year, he released the mixtapes Press Machine and Press a Brick (the latter featuring the viral track "Canada Goose," featuring a guest slot from Tory Lanez). More collaborations followed with everyone from British rapper Gibbs ("Sexy") to American artist Lil Uzi Vert ("420 in London"). In 2019, with several legal charges against him dropped, Pressa relocated to Los Angeles, releasing the album Prestige and following it up in 2020 with the EP Gardner Express, distributed by Sony Music and featuring the underground hit "96 Freestyle." Gardner Express was expanded a year later, with a remix of "Attachments," featuring then-girlfriend Coi Leray, going viral on streaming. The original version of the song received a Juno Award nomination for Rap Single of the Year. Pressa continued releasing singles like 2022's "Hear Me Out" and "Blame Me." "Unfollow Me" and "Minimum Wage" appeared in 2023. The next year, he collaborated with Toosii on the song "W Hotel," and released other tracks like "Safari," "Pieces" with TallupTwinz and Tim Neat, and "War Ready" with M24.
