Sapphirecut
Sapphirecut doubles as the alias of Philadelphia-based physician/vocalist/composer Megan Taylor and the progressive trance group she formed with keyboardists Dave Shaffer and Jake Knights. The Pittsburgh-born artist studied chemistry and music theory in college before pursuing a degree in medicine, but it wasn't until she bought a keyboard for her children that she decided to begin composing. After Taylor teamed with Shaffer and Knights in 1997, Sapphirecut became a reality. In December of 2001, Taylor brought dubplates of the group's track "Free Your Mind" to the Winter Music Conference in Miami and handed them out to all of the DJs she admired. Months later, Danny Tenaglia contacted her, looking to license the track for his Back to Basics collection. Sapphirecut didn't have a label, so Tenaglia introduced them to Rob Di Stefano, owner of the dance label Twisted. Twisted issued the "Free Your Mind" single in 2003 and it reached the Top Ten of Billboard's dance chart. Taylor continued to release tracks as Sapphirecut in the years that followed. Those singles were compiled on 2005's Archives of Sound, Vol. 1, which featured "Dreamdreamland." Taylor hosts her own radio show and continues to practice medicine by day and compose in her home studio by night.
