Fairground Attraction

Fairground Attraction are a British neo-skiffle group whose breezy folk-pop single "Perfect" topped the U.K. singles chart in 1988. Fronted by Glaswegian singer Eddi Reader, their cult classic debut album, The First of a Million Kisses, enjoyed critical and commercial success, ultimately serving as a springboard for Reader's solo career, which she launched soon after. After the group disbanded, 1990's collection of B-sides and live tracks Ay Fond Kiss appeared. Decades later, they reunited to mount a tour and comeback album with 2024's Beautiful Happening. Reader and guitarist Mark E. Nevin formed Fairground Attraction in the mid-'80s, enlisting drummer Roy Dodds and guitarrón (a large Mexican bass guitar) player Simon Edwards to complete the quartet. Contrary to pop trends of the era, the group's sound was entirely acoustic and resembled the skiffle bands of the 1950s with an emphasis on blending folk, jazz, country, and Cajun with pop melodies. After signing with RCA Records, they found immediate success with their debut single, "Perfect," which hit number one in the U.K. and around much of Europe. The follow-up single "Find My Love" fared nearly as well, hitting the Top Ten ahead of its parent album, The First of a Million Kisses, released in May 1988. At the 1989 BRIT Awards, Fairground Attraction took home two trophies (Best British Single for "Perfect" and Best British Album), but by the end of that year, Reader had left to start a solo career. To honor their contract, the group released 1990's Ay Fond Kiss, which consisted largely of unreleased songs and B-sides, then broke up. In the coming years, Reader established herself as a successful solo artist, and Nevin went on to work with artists like Morrissey and Kirsty MacColl while continuing to write music on his own. Meanwhile, Fairground Attraction's 1988 debut slowly burnished into a cult classic, and its singles endured as well. In an unlikely reunion, all four original members decided to re-form in 2024 and record a new album. Coinciding with a tour of the U.K., Beautiful Happening was released in September 2024.
