Glasser
The project of Cameron Mesirow, Glasser's striking experimental electronic pop frames her swooping vocals with productions that sound futuristic and primal at the same time. The combination of stark rhythms and circular melodies on 2010's debut album Ring evoked avant-garde music and global folk traditions in equal measure; on 2013's Interiors, cleanly sculpted electronics provided the perfect contrast to complex emotions. Mesirow took this contrast to its logical extreme by shaping conversations about sex into unsettling yet danceable tracks on 2018's Sextape, and brought some of that EP's vulnerability to the meditations on death and identity that made up 2023's crux.
Born in Los Angeles, Mesirow grew up surrounded by classic and more challenging music. Her father is a member of the Blue Man Group, while her mother played with Human Sexual Response in the 1970s and '80s. She grew up listening to Motown and new wave, and took piano lessons as a child; in her teens, she discovered punk, grunge, and ska. While studying German and literature at San Francisco State University, she began writing songs.
Inspired by a vision she had of a figure hovering over water, she named her project Glasser. She crafted demos that made their way to the label True Panther, which released the Apply EP in May 2009. Young Turks issued the EP in the U.K., as well as 2010's Tremel EP, which gathered remixes of the Apply track by Jamie xx and Astronomer. Glasser toured with the xx and Sigur Rós' Jónsi with a rotating cast of supporting players, including producers Van Rivers and the Subliminal Kid, who worked with her on her September 2010 debut album, Ring. Named for its flowing, symmetrical structure, the record also featured co-production by Ariel Rechtshaid and widened Glasser's sound with live instrumentation such as strings and woodwinds. Ring earned critical acclaim for its lush, hypnotic sound and reached number nine on Billboard's Dance/Electronic Albums chart in the U.S.
For Glasser's second album, Mesirow worked with Rivers once again. Appearing in October 2013 on True Panther, Interiors took inspiration from her move to New York and Rem Koolhaas' book Delirious New York, and presented a more streamlined, electronic-dominated incarnation of Mesirow's music. Another acclaimed release, the set peaked at 15 on the Dance/Electronic Albums chart. Despite Interiors' success, Mesirow took an extended break from making music.
Glasser resurfaced with 2018's self-released Sextape, an EP of pulsing dance tracks fashioned from interviews she conducted with other queer people about their formative sexual experiences, and appeared on Roll the Dice's single "Elevate." Another four years passed before the release of "New Scars," a sweeping, introspective single written during the early days of the COVID-19 global pandemic that was more in keeping with the sound of Ring and Interiors. Mesirow continued this mood on Glasser's third album, October 2023's crux. Appearing on One Little Independent, the album explored death, identity, and intimacy on pieces incorporating Celtic and Eastern European music forms as well as string arrangements.
