Alexandre Dossin

Pianist Alexandre Dossin is active in his adopted U.S. as a recording artist, musicologist, and educator. He is a specialist in the music of Liszt, but his repertory also includes much Russian music as well as American music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Dossin has made and recorded new performing editions of music by Mozart and other composers. In 2024, he issued the first volume in a series of recordings devoted to the complete piano music of George Walker. Dossin was born in Porto Alegre, Brazil, on September 13, 1970. He lived in Porto Alegre until he was 19, attending the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and studying piano with Dirce Knijnik and Hubertus Hofmann. Dossin went on to the Merzliankovsky Pre-Conservatory School in Moscow, where he studied with Boris Romanov and to the Tchaikovsky Conservatory itself, serving as assistant to Sergei Dorensky. Earning his master's degree in 1996 in Moscow, he moved to the U.S. for a doctorate at the University of Texas at Austin, where he served as an assistant to Gregory Allen and William Race. He received his degree in 2001, by which time his performing career had been underway for more than a decade and a half. Dossin appeared with the Montevideo Philharmonic Orchestra in Uruguay in 1985 and amassed a long record of performances in South America, Russia (with the Russian Ministry of Defense Symphonic Orchestra in 1994, among others), and Europe (including with the Yasi Philharmonic Orchestra in Athens in 1996). Dossin released his self-titled debut album on the Musicians Showcase label in 2003. In 2005, he issued A Touch of Brazil: Piano Music of Edino Krieger on the Blue Griffin label. In 2007, he moved to Naxos for an album of Liszt's Verdi concert paraphrases, and he has frequently recorded for that label since then. A performing breakthrough for Dossin came when he took first prize and a special prize at the Martha Argerich International Piano Competition in Buenos Aires in 2003 and earned strong praise from Argerich. The two have shared recital stages. Dossin has continued to perform internationally, mostly in South and North America. He has made multiple appearances at the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series in Chicago, and he has been a draw at festivals in the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Argentina. Dossin has maintained his performing career amid busy teaching schedules at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 2001 and 2002, the University of Wisconsin from 2002 to 2006, and the University of Oregon, where he remained on the faculty as of the mid-2020s. Dossin has made new editions of music by Mozart, Rachmaninov, Villa-Lobos, Liszt, Prokofiev, and Tchaikovsky for the publisher G. Schirmer, and he has recorded works from these for Schirmer's own label. He has made recordings for Naxos of music by Liszt, Kabalevsky, Prokofiev, and Leonard Bernstein, and in 2024, he issued the album Walker: Complete Piano Works, Volume 1, featuring the music of composer George Walker.
