Cherry Glazerr
Cherry Glazerr is a Los Angeles-based indie rock band whose raucous sound pulls from '90s grunge and fuzzy alt-pop with dark lyrics that swing between confrontation and self-inspection. Launched in the early 2010s as a vehicle for teenage singer/songwriter Clementine Creevy's bedroom pop, the project quickly evolved into a full band whose early recordings for the Burger label eventually led to a deal with indie superpower Secretly Canadian. Cherry Glazerr broke out with their acclaimed 2017 album, Apocalipstick, and were soon touring Europe and North America, and playing at major festivals like Coachella. Amid various lineup changes, Creevy continued to grow as a songwriter on releases like 2019's more reflective Stuffed & Ready and 2023's cathartic I Don't Want You Anymore.
Cherry Glazerr's roots go back to 2012 when Creevy, then in high school, began recording songs in her bedroom under the name Clembutt. After getting some early help from Lucy Miyaki of L.A. band Tashaki Miyaki, Creevy formed a group made up of drummer Hannah Uribe and vocalist Sophia Muller to help bring her songs to life. After adding bassist Sean Redman to the lineup, the quartet made a demo tape that caught the ear of Burger Records. The newly christened Cherry Glazerr (with a name taken from local NPR radio reporter Cherry Glaser) released the nine-song cassette, Papa Cremp, in early 2013 and started playing shows around L.A., including 2013's Burgerama Festival, where they gained a fan in Yves Saint Laurent's creative director Hedi Slimane. He invited Cherry Glazerr to play a show in Paris, and their song "Trick or Treat Dancefloor" was used in the company's ad campaign.
The foursome recorded their first album, Haxel Princess, for Burger, but Muller left before the album's release in January of 2014. Uribe also left the group, leaving Creevy to rebuild and revamp. Tabor Allen joined on drums and Sasami Ashworth on synths and the band began working with producers Joe Chiccarelli (the White Stripes, the Strokes), and Carlos de la Garza at Hollywood's famed Sunset Sound Recorders. With a new label and lineup in place, Cherry Glazerr's scruffy garage punk sound skipped ahead to the grungy '90s and added a layer of studio sheen while still holding onto Creevy's unique point of view. Their sophomore album Apocalipstick was issued in early 2017 and became their breakout release. Confident and ambitious, the collection saw Creevy taking on themes of sexuality, female empowerment, and individuality and the band spent much of that year touring North America and Europe supporting Foster the People and Slowdive. More lineup changed occurred in 2018 with new bassist Sami Perez joining and Ashworth leaving, effectively turning Cherry Glazerr into a trio for 2019's Stuffed & Ready. Produced again by Carlos de la Garza, the band's third album was just as dissonant and intense, but far more inward-looking and self-reflective by comparison.
In the early part of the next decade, grounded by the global pandemic, Creevy shifted the band into singles mode, releasing standalone songs like "Rabbit Hole" and "Big Bang" and collaborating with Portugal. The Man and Moon Boots. Cherry Glazerr also contributed a cover of "My Friend of Misery" to The Metallica Blacklist tribute compilation. By 2023, they had completed a fourth album, which Creevy co-produced alongside Yves Rothman. Released that September, I Don't Want You Anymore was at once more mature and cathartic, a fierce and fuzzy record that managed to reflect personal growth yet retained the band's fun garagey thump.
