MAY-A

Sydney-based singer/songwriter May-A plays brooding alt-pop with dreamy melodies and a youthful sense of introspection. The hotly tipped independent single "Apricots" helped her earn a major-label deal with Atlantic, and she released her ARIA-nominated debut EP, Don't Kiss Ur Friends, in 2021. A high-profile feature on Flume's 2022 hit "Say Nothing" further bolstered her exposure, as did 2023's genre-hopping Analysis Paralysis EP. Born Maya Cumming in Byron Bay, Australia, she began playing guitar at a young age and could be heard busking original music in the streets during her early teens. Taking a confessional approach to songwriting, many of May-A's songs focus on relationships, queer identity, and her journey into adulthood. Early releases like 2019's "Fools Paradise" and the 2020 tracks "Green" and "Apricots" displayed a knack for sweet pop hooks delivered with a mercurial tone and a healthy dose of cynicism. The latter two of those songs found significant streaming success, and at the age of 19, May-A signed a deal with Atlantic Records, which released her debut EP, Don't Kiss Ur Friends, in late 2021. Anchoring the set was the previously released "Apricots," which continued to put up big streaming numbers, and the EP itself hit number 31 on the Australian charts and was nominated for an ARIA Award. After guesting on Budjerah's track "Talk," May-A joined Flume in early 2022 on his hit single "Say Nothing." May-A tapped into a wellspring of styles, from sensual indie pop to fiery grunge, on the 2023 EP Analysis Paralysis.
