Misha Tsiganov

A leading New York jazz pianist, the Russian-born Misha Tsiganov is a daring improviser with a sound steeped in the post-bop tradition. He first garnered wider attention in the 2000s and has played with artists like Hendrik Meurkens, Myron Walden, and Joe Chambers. His own albums like 2014's The Artistry of the Standard, 2018's Playing with the Wind, and 2022's Misha's Wishes feature his adept small group with trumpeter Alex Sipiagin and Seamus Blake. In 2024, he delivered Painter of Dreams, which featured Sipiagin and guests including saxophonist Chris Potter. Born in 1966 in St. Petersburg, Russia, Tsiganov grew up in a family of artists -- his father was a sculptor, and his mother was a music teacher. He began to play piano at the age of six and graduated from Mussorgsky College of Music. In 1990, he took home the Prize-winner-diploma from the All-Russia Jazz Competition and, the following year, immigrated to the United States to study with vibraphonist Gary Burton at Boston's Berklee College of Music. From there, he moved to New York City where he found work with a bevy of jazz and Latin artists, including Norman Hedman, Johnny Colon, Chico Freeman, and Hendrik Meurkens, among others. As a leader, he debuted with 2007's Always Heading West and returned in 2012 with Dedications. He has also performed and/or recorded with such luminaries as Clark Terry, Michael Brecker, Wynton Marsalis, Joe Chambers, Gary Bartz, Myron Walden, and many more. Beginning with 2014's The Artistry of the Standard, Tsiganov has released a string of daring, sophisticated albums on the Criss Cross label. That album, as well as 2016's Spring Feelings, 2018's Playing with the Wind, and 2022's Misha's Wishes showcased his longtime friend and collaborator trumpeter Alex Sipiagin, saxophonist Seamus Blake, and others. In 2024, he released Painter of Dreams, which found him playing Fender Rhodes and Minimoog synth, and once again featured Sipiagin, along with bassist Matt Brewer and drummer Johnathan Blake. It featured guests including saxophonists Chris Potter and Miguel Zenon, and vocalist Hiske Oosterwijk.
