Tee Grizzley
Tee Grizzley is one of the leading figures of the Detroit trap scene. He scored a viral hit with his debut single, "First Day Out," which appeared on YouTube in late 2016. The song's raw lyrical approach and visceral storytelling connected with millions of fans and put Grizzley on the map. Within months of the release of his 2017 mixtape My Moment, he was signed to a major label and on tour with 21 Savage. Multiple mixtapes and studio work like 2021's Built for Whatever cemented his reputation as a ruthless lyricist and a powerful force in his era of rap. Continuing his run of charting mixtapes, Half Tee Half Beast and Chapters of the Trenches appeared in 2022. Further output included 2023 Skilla Baby collaboration Controversy, and albums like 2024's Post Traumatic.
Tee Grizzley was born Terry Sanchez Wallace in Detroit in 1994. Originally part of the Allstars BallHard crew and known as ASBH Tee, he served a jail sentence of nearly three years for armed robbery. After being released, he recorded the harrowing, slow-burning "First Day Out" with producer Helluva. The song was a regional hit and racked up millions of views and streams. Its success led to Grizzley signing a deal with 300 Entertainment, supported by major-label Atlantic. A handful of singles were released during the first few months of 2017, including "From the D to the A" featuring Lil Yachty. The commercial mixtape My Moment arrived that April and debuted on the Billboard 200 chart at number 44, despite no guest appearances to boost its profile. Following a few more singles, Grizzley and Chicago rapper Lil Durk released the collaborative mixtape Bloodas in December 2017.
Grizzley's first official album, Activated, appeared in May 2018 and hit the Top Ten of the Billboard 200. Later that year, the mixtape Still My Moment surfaced, boasting guest spots by Chance the Rapper, Lil Pump, Offset, and other rap stars. His second proper album, Scriptures, arrived in June 2019. Executive produced by Timbaland, the release featured guest appearances from YNW Melly and A Boogie wit da Hoodie, and debuted at number 20 on the Billboard 200.
Grizzley kicked off the 2020s with the release of several new tracks, including "Red Light," "Payroll," and in June of 2020, "Mr. Officer," a song that addressed police violence and included guest performances from Queen Naija and the Detroit Youth Choir. That track landed on his mixtape The Smartest, which arrived the same month. Debuting just outside the Top 20 on the U.S. albums chart, the introspective set featured appearances by Lil Baby, Meek Mill, and fellow Detroit native Big Sean. In 2021, he teamed up with his brother Baby Grizzley on the song "Gave That Back." Grizzley's third album, Built for Whatever, was released that May. The record featured guest contributions from Big Sean, Lil Durk, King Von, Young Dolph, and several others, and peaked at the number 15 spot on the Billboard 200 chart.
Early 2022 saw the release of the hard-hitting single "Afterlife." The song landed on Grizzley's next mixtape, Half Tee Half Beast, which arrived in April. Another mixtape, the conceptual Chapters of the Trenches, was released in October. A collaboration with Skilla Baby, Controversy, appeared in 2023. The full-length Tee's Coney Island included guests like Chris Brown, Mariah the Scientist, and Machine Gun Kelly. In 2024, Grizzley appeared on Kash Doll's "Pressin'," then issued the solo single "Suffer in Silence." He then teamed up with Future for the song "Swear to God." In October 2024, his fifth studio album Post Traumatic arrived, with featured appearances from G Herbo, Hunxho, J. Cole and others. The album broke into the Top 100 of the Billboard charts, debuting at the number 60 spot.
