Cosmo's Midnight
The bright keyboard timbres, idiosyncratic beats, and feel-good spirit of Cosmo's Midnight are the creation of twin siblings Cosmo and Patrick Liney. Working with collaborators from the pop, indie electronica, rap, and EDM realms, they made their major-label debut with the 2015 EP Moments before adding touches of jazz and funky disco to their whimsical sound for their full-length debut, What Comes Next, in 2018. They continued along these uplifting lines while incorporating a diverse assortment of guests on albums like 2020's Yesteryear and 2024's Stop Thinking Start Feeling.
Hailing from Sydney, Australia, the Liney brothers got their first management deal by winning a Future Classic remix contest with their breezy take on Flume's "Sleepless" in 2012. Led by the duo's debut single, "Phantasm," with guest vocalist Nicole Millar, the EP Surge was released on Yes Please in mid-2013. Their stand-alone single "Moshi," featuring Polographia, followed that December before the pair signed with Sony Music Australia. Their second EP, 2015's Moments, included collaborations with, among others, Wave Racer, Kučka, and Lido. Cosmo's Midnight embarked on their first North American tour in early 2017, selling out shows at The Roxy in Los Angeles and Rough Trade in New York. They followed that with a tour of Australia and stops throughout Asia.
The duo released their first album for Sony in 2018. Featuring guests such as pop singer Tove Styrke, rappers Buddy and Jay Prince, and fellow Australian electronic duo Panama, What Comes Next cracked the Top 40 in Australia. Their next album, October 2020's Yesteryear included appearances by Matthew Young, Age.Sex.Location, and Stevan. It did nearly as well as their debut had in Australia, where it peaked at number 42, while the title track hit number 40 in New Zealand. Yesteryear Remix Album arrived the following July.
The project focused on non-album singles in 2021, issuing collaborations with Jitwam, Baynk, and Yung Bae before returning to New Zealand's Top 40 in 2022 with the unassisted "Can't Do Without My Baby," the lead single from their third long-player. After teasing with a half-dozen advance singles, the album Stop Thinking Start Feeling finally arrived on Sony in May 2024. Bedroom pop artist Spill Tab and genre-bending R&B musicians Forest Claudette, Kyle Dion, and Shungudzo were among its guests.
