Maverick Sabre

Maverick Sabre's deeply personal and empathetic songs come from a working-class perspective and evince a passion for gritty soul, rock, and hip-hop. The singer/songwriter and occasional rapper made a big splash in 2012 with a pair of Top 20 singles, "Let Me Go" and "I Need," and a number two album, Lonely Are the Brave, that was certified gold within a few weeks of release. He followed up with the comparatively polished Innerstanding in 2015, then went independent with his third charting studio album, When I Wake Up, roughly half of which he either produced of co-produced. Maverick looked forward and backward in 2022, issuing both Don't Forget to Look Up and a tenth anniversary re-recording of his debut. Burn the Right Things Down, inspired by the lack of fear he heard in his voice when he reacquainted himself with his first album, continued to push his sound in a more rock-oriented direction in 2024. Throughout his career, Maverick has been a keen collaborator across genres with Professor Green, Joey Bada$$, Jorja Smith, and Chronixx representing a small sample of his recording partners. Maverick Sabre was born Michael James Stafford in the London borough of Hackney. He moved to Ireland during his childhood but returned to England to pursue music. A modest start came with compelling, everyman-type appearances on tracks by Terawrizt and Nu-Centz and Jermiside & Danny Diggs. In 2010, he was more prolific with additional Terawrizt and Nu-Centz collaborations, featured appearances on Professor Green's Top 40 U.K. hit "Jungle" and Chase & Status' "Fire in Your Eyes," and the November release of his mixtape Travelling Man. In March of the following year, signed to major-label Mercury, Maverick released his debut EP, The Lost Words, promoted by the remorseful and sobering "Look What I’ve Done," a fusion of hip-hop, R&B, reggae, and folk. Before the end of 2011, "Let Me Go" and "I Need," retro-contemporary pop-soul previews of Maverick's first album, entered the U.K. chart in the Top 20, peaking respectively at numbers 16 and 18. On the strength of those hits, which were produced respectively by Matt Prime and Utters, parent album Lonely Are the Brave debuted at number two on the album chart the following January. A third charting single followed with "No One," produced by Fraser T Smith. Although Maverick soon began work on his follow-up, and he continued making featured appearances, such as on K Koke's charting "Turn Back," it wasn't until October 2015 that he released his second album, Innerstanding. Supported by the singles "Walk Into the Sun" and "Come Fly Away," the album leaned further toward pop with production from several Lonely Are the Brave contributors, such as Utters, Fraser T Smith, Eg White, and Jimmy Hogarth. Chronixx, Joey Bada$$, and Gorgon City were among the diverse set of guests. After Innerstanding reached number 41 on the album chart, Maverick set up the independent label FAMM, launched in 2018 with his and George the Poet's single "Follow the Leader," featuring label signee Jorja Smith. (Maverick had previously been Smith's duet partner on "Carry Me Home.") Supporting roles on tracks by the likes of Shy FX, Liam Bailey, and Rudimental, and the singles "Drifting" and "Her Grace," led to When I Wake Up, Maverick's third LP, a number 46 album upon its release in March 2019. When I Wake Up brought Jorja Smith collaborator Charlie J. Perry into the mix as another production associate, and much of its material reflected on socioeconomic issues with a street-level point of view. During the next few years, Maverick made another round of featured appearances and released the occasional non-album track, and in 2020, he was behind an EP entitled You Know How It Feels. Don't Forget to Look Up, his fourth album, was issued in January 2022. The song that received the warmest reception was "Good Man," a soulful ballad produced by Linden Jay. Maverick himself produced much of the remainder, including "Not Easy Love," on which he partnered with Demae. Later in the year, he commemorated the tenth anniversary of Lonely Are the Brave -- from which he hadn't received any royalties -- with a re-recording titled Lonely Are the Brave (Mav's Version). In 2023, he introduced his production alter ego with Micheál Dear. (Beat Tape), Vol. 1, collaborated with Nia Archives on "No Need 2 Be Sorry, Call Me?," and further celebrated his debut with the release of the London performance Lonely Are the Brave (Live from KOKO). Maverick continued in 2024 with the heady Burn the Right Things Down. His fifth proper album landed that October with the rolling "If I Could Only Love You Again" as the lead single.
