Pan Daijing
Chinese-born, Berlin-based musician and performance artist Pan Daijing creates a wide variety of visceral, cathartic experimental music, ranging from harsh industrial noise to operatic pieces. Her work is based in improvisation and storytelling, and utilizes analog synthesizers, field recordings, and especially her own striking voice. She released her acclaimed debut LP, Lack, in 2017, and later premiered the opera/exhibition performance Tissues at the Tate Modern; a studio recording of the piece appeared in 2022.
She first appeared in 2015 with Sex & Disease, a cassette of unsettling industrial soundscapes. She received notice for her confrontational performances as well as her fearlessly eclectic DJ sets. Her profile grew considerably in 2017, when United Arab Emirates-based Bedouin Records released A Satin Sight, an EP of brutal industrial techno, and two of her tracks appeared on Power Vacuum's Vectors 3 compilation, including the fittingly titled "Very Uncomfortable Please." She also formed an alliance with Bill Kouligas' Pan label, appearing on its acclaimed ambient/experimental compilation Mono No Aware (2017). The label also issued Daijing's debut LP, Lack, comprising field recordings as well as excerpts from her improvised live performances. Daijing contributed to Houndstooth's 2018 compilation In Death's Dream Kingdom, inspired by T.S. Eliot's poem "The Hollow Men," and appeared on albums by Amnesia Scanner and Yves Tumor.
Daijing was commissioned for performances by institutions such as the Tate Modern, Martin Gropius Bau, and the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. She released her second LP, the dark and disorienting Jade, in 2021. Tissues, a studio recording of an opera in five acts which premiered at the Tate Modern in 2019, was released in early 2022. Later in the year, Daijing participated in X100, a festival in the spirit of Iannis Xenakis, held at Kraftwerk Berlin. In 2023, she presented works such as Until Due Time, Everything Is Else.
