Giora Feidman
This clarinet virtuoso and composer is equally at home with classical music and with traditional and new klezmer music. Feidman is a fourth-generation klezmorim, but was trained as a classical musician. He began his professional career at the age of 20, joining the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom he played for nearly 20 years. In the 1970s, with his own groups, he was credited by some as starting the klezmer revival in Europe and the U.S. He has advanced the klezmer style, freely crossing the borders between traditional klezmer, jazz, tango, classical, and Sephardic music. Although his music is rooted in Jewish tradition, he sees it as transcending race and religion.
In 1984, he played the main role in Peter Zadek's production of Joshua Sobol's Ghetto. In 1985, his first solo tour met with resounding success. Since then, he regularly performs in New York and Germany. Feidman played the title role in Der Rattenfänger (The Rat Catcher) at the Dortmunder Opernhaus. In 1994, Steven Spielberg asked him to collaborate on the film music for Schindler's List.
Roberto Pansera, Maurice Jarre, Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta are just a few of the musicians that have worked with and composed for him. Feidman has also appeared with the Palestinian Mawassii. Bernstein said of him: "He bridges many rifts between generations, cultures, and social distinctions. And he does all this with artistic perfection. Long live Giora, his clarinet, and his soul music!"
