Salt Cathedral

Salt Cathedral is the indie duo of Juliana Ronderos and Nicolas Losada, two Colombian musicians based in Brooklyn, New York. Their unique music fuses tropical electropop elements with a range of styles like Latin, jazz, folk, and dancehall. A series of EPs and a 2017 dub project featuring Lee "Scratch" Perry led up to the release of the debut album, Carisma, in 2020. After a four-year gap, Salt Cathedral returned with 2024's Before It's Gone, a genre-traversing semi-concept album exploring themes of existence in the modern world. Ronderos and Losada grew up in the same neighborhood in Bogotá, Colombia but met while studying jazz composition at Boston's Berklee College of Music. After spending some time in the Los Angeles-based math rock group Il Albanico, the pair settled in Brooklyn and formed Salt Cathedral in 2011, naming themselves after a famous church built in a Colombian salt mine as a nod to their heritage. Initially a quintet, the band released its self-titled debut EP, which featured the streaming hit "Move Along," in 2013. By the time they issued 2014's Oom Velt EP, Salt Cathedral were down to Ronderos and Losada, and their electronic and Latin influences were more pronounced. The duo had a busy 2016, issuing the single "No Ordinary Man" that February, the Homage EP in March, and "Unraveling," a collaboration with Matisyahu, in October. Ronderos and Losada incorporated more reggae and dancehall elements into the 2017 singles "Fragments," "Always There When I Need You," and "Run for the Money," which featured Assassin. These songs were included on Salt Cathedral's 2017 project, Big Waves/Small Waves, which also included contributions from Lee "Scratch" Perry, as well as Assassin and Matisyahu. Over the next two years, they teased their full-length debut with singles like "Rude Boy" and "Caviar." The album Carisma was released by electronic label Ultra Records May 2020. The duo took their time making a follow-up, ruminating on how to navigate life and find hope in an increasingly fraught modern world. This was the tone they brought to Salt Cathedral's next project, a loose concept album that threaded multiple genres with themes of climate change, social media, trust, and friendship. Before It's Gone was released in 2024.
