Miya Folick

As a young adult, Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Miya Folick was drawn to music as a creative outlet because of its ability to combine emotional and intellectual content. Bringing contemplative lyrics to intense indie rock, her debut EP, Strange Darling, was released in 2015, with the full-length Premonitions following in 2018. A more personal EP titled 2007 saw release in 2022, setting the tone for her 2023 full-length, Roach. A native of Santa Ana, California, Folick studied acting at New York University in the late 2000s before dropping out and moving back to California, where she spent time learning to play the guitar and completing a B.A. in theater from the University of Southern California. She then looked to play music around town, creating a profile on a dating app that said she was looking for a band. That resulted in finding a bass player who put together the rest of her first band. Folick's debut EP, the self-produced Strange Darling, was recorded by Mark Rains (Alice Bag, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club) at his Station House Studio in Echo Park. It was released in 2015. Her second EP, Give It to Me, followed on Terrible Records in 2017 and included a cover of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock." Inspired by reading an article about abusive power structures, the defiant "Deadbody" arrived in March 2018, in advance of her debut LP, Premonitions, which followed later that year. She supported it with opening slots on tours with Pale Waves and Sunflower Bean. Folick made her Nettwerk label debut in September 2022 with the more reflective and vulnerable 2007 EP. It was accompanied by tours of the U.K. and Ireland, Europe, and North American, including stretches with Band of Horses, Bishop Briggs, and Tove Lo. For her sophomore LP, Folick worked with producers like Gabe Wax and Max Hershenow to create more straightforward arrangements. Led by the single "Bad Thing," Roach appeared in June 2023.
