Craig Morgan

Craig Morgan's calling card as a country singer is his warm sentimental streak, a trait highlighted on his biggest hit, "That's What I Love About Sunday." Spending four weeks on the top of the Billboard Hot Country Charts in 2005, "That's What I Love About Sunday" ushered in a few years where Morgan was a regular presence in the Country Top Ten, usually with singles that alternated between friendly country-pop/rockers and earnest ballads. Morgan's hitmaking streak faded away in the early 2010s, but he kept working, winding up getting a boost in 2019 when his single "The Father, My Son, And the Holy Ghost" gave him his first charting single in over five years. The hit led to the release of God, Family, Country, a 2020 album that was expanded with four additional songs in a 2022 deluxe edition featuring the single "How You Make a Man." Born in Kingston Springs, Tennessee, Craig Morgan was the son of a professional country bassist, so he grew up around music and began singing as a child. It took him a while to pursue a professional musical career of his own, though. When he turned 18, he began working as an EMT before turning his attention the U.S. Army. Morgan served for ten years, singing and writing songs in his spare time, settling in Nashville after he finished his stint in the service. As he searched for a big break, he worked odd jobs and sang demos. Eventually, he signed with Atlantic Records. Atlantic issued Craig Morgan in 2000. Produced by Buddy Cannon and Norro Wilson, the album featured three singles but only its first, "Something to Write Home About," cracked the Billboard Country Top 40. After the release of his eponymous debut, Morgan left Atlantic for Broken Bow. "Almost Home," released at the tail-end of 2002, became Morgan's first Billboard Country Top Ten, peaking at number six and setting up the March 2003 release of I Love It. Two subsequent singles -- "Every Friday Afternoon" and "Look at Us" -- went into the Top 40. Preceded by his first (and only) number one single, "That's What I Love About Sunday" -- Morgan's third album, My Kind of Livin', reached seven in 2005. The album wound up as Morgan's first to go Gold and it was his popular peak thanks in part to "Redneck Yacht Club," which went to number two on the Billboard Country chart and nearly cracked the pop Top 40, topping out at 45. The album also featured the number 12 hit "I Got You." Arriving quickly on the heels of My Kind of Livin', Little Bit of Life went to 13 upon its 2006 release on the strength of its number seven title track and the hits "Tough" and "International Harvester," which went to 11 and 10, respectively. The album was his second to be certified Gold. A rush-released Greatest Hits closed out his Broken Bow contract in February of 2008 and Morgan moved to BNA Records, releasing That's Why that October. Peaking at number eight on Billboard's Country Chart, That's Why featured two country Top Ten singles -- the number nine "Love Remembers" and "Bonfire," which went to four -- as well as "This Ain't Nothin'," which peaked at 13 in early 2010. A year later, Morgan parted ways with BNA, setting up shop at Black River Entertainment. His first album for the label was 2012's This Ole Boy, which peaked at number five, with its title track making it to number 13. The compilation The Journey (Livin' Hits) appeared in 2013, featuring the new single "Wake Up Lovin' You," which went to 14 on Billboard's Country Airplay chart. A Whole Lot More to Me arrived in June 2016, but made little impression on country radio. In 2019, Morgan's single "The Father, My Son, and the Holy Ghost" climbed to 25 on Billboard's Country Songs, partially assisted by Blake Shelton singing the song's praises on social media. After it charted, Morgan re-signed with Broken Bow Records. The hit single anchored his 2020 release God, Family, Country. A deluxe edition of God, Family, Country featuring four new songs, including the single "How You Make a Man," appeared in November 2022.
