Way Dynamic
Drawing from the singer/songwriters and soft rock of the 1970s as well as styles like bossa and Baroque pop, Way Dynamic is led by multi-instrumentalist Dylan Young, drummer for Snowy Band, Darren Hanlon, and more. The project put an oddball, sophisticated spin on smooth sounds with their 2022 debut album, So Familiar.
Dylan Young started Way Dynamic in Ballarat, Australia, as an umbrella for his various music creations that hadn't yet found a home. Taking inspiration from the likes of Brian Wilson, Carole King, and Steely Dan, the project grew into a sometimes-band with a more focused, soft rock-styled sound charted by Young. Recorded by himself at his home in Carlton, Victoria, in the span of just a few days, Way Dynamic's debut EP, What's It All for Now, appeared on Melbourne label Our Golden Friend in November 2018.
Young subsequently moved to Melbourne and found demand as a drummer, playing in the indie pop groups Snowy Band and Cool Sounds in addition to playing for Snowy Band's Emma Russack and singer/songwriter Darren Hanlon, among others. He wrote the songs for Way Dynamic's full-length debut in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic while sheltering at home. With Young playing most of the instruments himself, So Familiar was recorded to tape with Good Morning's Liam Parsons and Stefan Blair as well as guests including Lehmann B Smith, Gordon Li, and Russack. It arrived on Bobo Integral and Earth Libraries in October 2022.
