Andrew Wyatt
A Grammy Award-winning songwriter and producer, Andrew Wyatt is most visibly known for his work as the lead singer of the Swedish electronic pop group Miike Snow. Along with his 2013 solo album Descender, he has released several Top 50 Billboard 200-charting albums with Miike Snow, including 2012's Happy to You and 2016's iii. Away from the band, he has garnered both commercial and critical success, co-writing the 2011 Bruno Mars hit "Grenade" and co-writing the Academy Award-nominated, Grammy-winning "Shallow" for the Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper drama A Star Is Born. Wyatt has also co-written songs for an array of artists including Charli XCX, Florence + the Machine, Flume, Liam Gallagher, and Miley Cyrus, among others. In 2023, he collaborated with longtime associate Mark Ronson on the hit Barbie movie soundtrack, co-writing "I'm Just Ken" and producing Billie Eilish's "What Was I Made For?"
Born in 1971 in New York City, Wyatt grew up in Manhattan, where he studied dance and music from a young age. After high school, he briefly studied jazz at The New School. It was during this period that he met fellow musician Greg Kurstin and formed the short-lived experimental pop outfit Funkraphiliacs. He eventually caught the attention of Capitol Records and signed a solo contract, even spending a year recording an album at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios. However, drug and mental health issues found him entering rehab. Wyatt then spent several years studying classical music at the University of Colorado, but he ultimately returned to New York City. There, he formed the group the A.M. with former Jeff Buckley bandmates Michael Tighe and Parker Kindred, releasing a sole eponymously titled 2005 album before breaking up.
In 2007, Wyatt visited Sweden, where he was introduced to musicians Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg. Together, they formed the dance-rock band Miike Snow, releasing their 2009 eponymous debut as well as 2012's Happy to You and 2016's iii, with the latter two both reaching the Top 50 in Sweden and the United States.
On his own, Wyatt issued his debut solo album, Descender, in 2013. Recorded during a month-long break from Miike Snow, the album found him working in Prague with a large orchestra and collaborating with longtime friends Anthony Rossomando (the Libertines), Brad Traux (Interpol), Damon McMahon (Amen Dunes), and John Herndon (Tortoise).
Just prior to launching Miike Snow, Wyatt had begun collaborating on projects with other artists, starting with his writing and production work on the soundtrack to the Hugh Grant comedy Music and Lyrics, for which contributed several songs, namely "PoP! Goes My Heart." More studio credits followed with Mark Ronson, Carl Barât, Coco Sumner, and many more. In 2011, he co-wrote Bruno Mars' chart-topping hit "Grenade," which earned a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year. Wyatt has co-written and/or produced songs for a bevy of other artists including Charli XCX, Beck, Emile Haynie, Florence + the Machine, Flume, Lorde, Liam Gallagher, Miley Cyrus, and Caroline Polachek. Away from pop music, he has also recorded sound installations for galleries and collaborated with Ronson and Wayne McGregor on the music for the 2012 one-act ballet Carbon Life.
In 2018, Wyatt co-wrote the song "Shallow" for the Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga romantic drama A Star Is Born. A massive worldwide hit, the track garnered numerous accolades, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. It picked up four Grammy nominations, taking home the awards for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Song Written for Visual Media.
In 2023, Wyatt again collaborated with Ronson, putting together both the score and soundtrack for director Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie. Together, they co-wrote and produced the song "I'm Just Ken," as well as Dua Lipa's "Dance the Night." They also co-produced Billie Eilish's "What Was I Made For?" and other tracks. The album reached number two on the Billboard 200. Also in 2023, Wyatt released the single "Beyond the Pale," a moody breakup anthem and his first solo material in over a decade.
