Hanna Leess

Singer-songwriter Hanna Leess crafts avant-pop that resembles a sonic message in a bottle, adrift from a realm where time unfurls in restless, rhythmic currents and melodies sprout in lush vines. Based in Berlin, the American-born Leess has long carved out a path that swerves between genres with the unpredictability of the best kind of unique songwriting and pop music.

Dirty Mouth Sweetheart (2016), introduced a collection of songs that seemed to flicker between worlds. This Way, Walk (cntct/PIAS, 2017), once again drew listeners into its winding corridors of eclectic songwriting. Since then, Leess has shared stages with Damien Rice and José González, and her songs have slipped into the cultural bloodstream via TV shows such as Grey’s Anatomy and video game soundtrack League of Legends (among others).

Now, after a four-year hiatus that saw her stepping away from the public gaze to delve into the complexities of motherhood, Leess returns with innocent as a rose (2024), a work of shapeshifting jazz-inflected pop that threads together both acoustic and electronic undercurrents. Here, Leess unravels the complexities of motherhood, partnership and creativity with both a delicate and unflinching touch. It’s jazz that’s forgotten how to behave – or folk-pop that simply knows no bounds.
