Jenny Oaks Baker
In addition to her appearances on Billboard genre charts with her recordings of soundtrack, rock, holiday, and religious tunes, violinist Jenny Oaks Baker has performed as a soloist with the likes of the National Symphony Orchestra and the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. She made her recording debut in 1998 with On Wings of Song as a master's candidate at Juilliard and became a Grammy nominee with her ninth album, 2011's Wish Upon a Star: A Tribute to the Music of Walt Disney. In 2019, Jenny Oaks Baker & Family Four featured Baker and her four children, who play violin, cello, guitar, and piano.
A native of Provo, Utah, Jenny June Oaks began studying violin at the age of four. Appearing as a soloist with an orchestra for the first time when she was eight, she won several competition awards during her youth. She went on to study violin at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia as an undergrad before earning her master's degree in 1999 from the Juilliard School in New York City. In 1998, she married Matthew Baker and released her first album, On Wings of Song, a set of hymns arranged for violin and orchestral accompaniment.
Continuing to record graceful violin covers of popular songs, she issued Songs My Mother Taught Me, also on the Desert Book label, in 1999. After a move to Shadow Mountain Records, 2000's Where Love Is offered renditions of "The Swan" from Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals and a Beethoven romance among folk and pop material. Around this time, Baker became first violinist in the National Symphony Orchestra, a position she would hold for seven years.
Her fourth LP, 2001's American Tapestry, concentrated on American works from the Civil War through Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story. In 2003, Mormon Tabernacle issued The Light Divine, a mix of classical and religious works with a focus on hymns. It was followed by her first collection, The Best of Jenny Oaks Baker, released by Desert Book. It hit the Top 20 of the Billboard Classical Albums chart.
Resigning from the National Symphony Orchestra in order to spend more time with her growing family, Baker presented her first Christmas long-player, O Holy Night, in 2007. It landed on Billboard's Holiday Albums chart before the arrival of 2008's Silver Screen Serenade, which was followed by the 2010 religious set Then Sings My Soul and 2011's Wish Upon a Star: A Tribute to the Music of Walt Disney, all on Shadow Mountain Records. Wish Upon a Star earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Instrumental Album.
Another Christmas recording, Noel: Carols of Christmas Past came out in 2012, and Baker took on hits from the '60s through the '90s with Classic: The Rock Album, released in 2014. It became her seventh record to appear on the Billboard classical chart. The following two years brought the religious LPs My Home Can Be a Holy Place and Awakening. Her 2016 release with the Millennial Choirs & Orchestras, Amazing Grace: Songs of Atonement, reached number eight on the Billboard Christian albums chart. Another collection of hymns and spirituals, The Spirit of God, arrived in 2018. In 2019, she returned with Jenny Oaks Baker & Family Four, a mix of pop, classical, religious, and movie music by Baker and her four children, all instrumentalists between the ages of 12 and 18 at the time of its release.
