Abstract In this paper, a hybrid mass damper (HMD) and its hyperstability thanks to a power flow approach are studied. The HMD proposed combines an active control system with an optimal passive device. The initial passive system is an electromagnetic Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) and the control law is a modified velocity feedback with a phase compensator. The resulting hybrid controller system is theoretically hyperstable and ensures fail-safe behavior. Experiments are performed to validate the numerical simulation and provide good results in terms of vibration attenuations. Both excitation from the bottom in the frequency domain and shock response in the time domain are tested and analyzed. The different power flows in terms of active and reactive powers are estimated numerically and experimentally on the inertial damper (passive and active) and on the HMD. More over, through a mechanical analogy of the proposed system, it is shown that this hybrid device can be seen as an active realization of an inerter based tuned-mass-damper associated with a sky-hook damper. Observations and analysis provide insight into the hyperstable behavior imposed by the specific control law.

Objectives: Lower rectal resection is associated with a high rate of postoperative complications and, therefore, adversely impacts the postoperative health-related quality of life (QoL). Though sporadically practiced in different centers, there is no standard perioperative protocol for the management of patients with rectal growths. The aim of this analysis is to evaluate the patient-reported outcomes after low rectal resections followed by an end-to-end-reconstruction and temporary covering ileostomy using a multidisciplinary fail-safe-concept.Methods: Between 2015 and 2020, we evaluated patient reported outcomes after open and laparoscopic rectal resections with end-to-end reconstruction with a primary straight anastomosis using a standardized perioperative pathway All patients with stoma were excluded from the study. The data for the QoL of patients was collected using the established Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS)-score and the EORTC-C30 and CR-29 questionnaires at a single postoperative timepoint.Results: We recruited 78 stoma-free patients for this analysis. Of 78 patients included in the study, 87.2% were operated laparoscopically and the mean global health status was 67.95 points, while a major LARS was detected in 48 (61.5%) patients. No anastomotic leakage (AL) occurred within the study cohort. There was no significant change in the LARS-score or the global health status depending on the follow-up-period.Conclusion: This study shows that good QoL and functional outcomes with no AL are achievable following end-to-end straight anastomosis using a standardized perioperative surgical fail-safe protocol procedure.

In a standalone DC microgrid, sources are interconnected in a parallel configuration. When sources of different power ratings are parallel connected, there arises a major issue of circulating currents which disturb current sharing by sources as per their capacity. Consequently, the voltage regulation becomes poorer. Additionally, connecting line resistances also play their part to contribute to abnormal current sharing. Droop controllers are normally preferred for the mitigation of circulating currents among parallel-connected sources. However, droop controllers cannot eliminate circulating currents for different rating sources. Hence, current sharing and voltage regulation cannot be ensured simultaneously. To address the issues, a distributed architecture-based Sliding Mode Control (SMC) technique is proposed in this paper. An analysis of the circulating currents for a two-source system is presented. Simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness and fail-safe operation of the proposed technique in a steady-state condition.

This article discusses the development of effective methods and tools for assessing the fault tolerance of logical circuits, the mechanism of logical masking, the development of the route of re-synthesis of combinational circuits, methods for increasing fault tolerance. A method of iterative circuit modification is proposed, due to an increase in the level of logical masking of the circuit.
