Study of foraging behaviour of Tricoloured Munia Lonchura malacca and its interaction in pearl millet crop fields was conducted in six villages of Tindivanam taluk, Villupuram district, Tamil Nadu from April to June 2020. A total of six flocks containing 1,640 birds of Tricoloured Munia were enumerated. The number of birds per flock varied from 60 to 800. They never split into small flocks and maintained the same flock size throughout the day. Tricoloured Munias used nine plant species for roosting. Twelve quadrats (0.3 ha) each of 5 m x 5 m size were laid in the pearl millet fields covering six villages. A total of 10,295 spikes were counted in these plots, and of these 3,785 spikes (36.7%) were found damaged by foraging munias. The maximum damage of 99.6% was observed in Thenputhur village. Along with Tricoloured Munia, five other granivorous birds, such as Baya Weaver Ploceus philippinus, Indian Silverbill Euodice malabarica, Common Babbler Turdoides caudata, Rose-ringed Parakeet Psittacula krameri, and White-rumped Munia Lonchura striata were also found foraging without any inter-specific competition. Farmers adopted various traditional bird repellent techniques such as beating utensils, throwing pebbles/soil on the crop, placing scarecrows, tying multi-coloured ribbons, and hanging bottles to chase the birds away.

<p><b>Foraging behaviour can have a major influence on the survival and reproduction of individuals which can ultimately impact the viability of a population. Foraging is particularly challenging for procellariiformes (tube nosed seabirds) who feed on patchily distributed prey in the highly dynamic marine environment. During the breeding season procellariiformes must also increase their foraging effort to raise their chick whilst having a reduced foraging range. As a result, procellariiformes have adopted various foraging strategies, such as dual foraging and sexual foraging dimorphism, to cope with this energy demanding lifestyle. Westland petrels (Procellaria westlandica) are an endangered winter breeding procellariform endemic to the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Unlike other procellariiformes, previous studies have found little evidence of Westland petrels using sexually dimorphic or dual foraging strategies. Furthermore, Westland petrels also display a high level of individual variation in foraging behaviour. To understand why there is so much variation and what factors are driving it, I first examined variation at the population, individual and within individual level to describe and categorise different foraging strategies. I then investigated how factors such as year, sex and foraging site influenced variation. Finally, I examined how oceanic variables influenced habitat selection and foraging characteristics to understand how the environment drives variation in foraging behaviour.</b></p> <p>Considerable variation was found at all levels. Most of the variation was explained by year with individuals taking shorter foraging trips in 2011 and longer trips in 2015. Females foraged further than males suggesting that there is some degree of sexual foraging segregation occurring in Westland petrels. I also found that the highest variation in foraging behaviour was exhibited by individuals within their core foraging site on the West Coast. Sea surface temperatures were highest at the West Coast foraging site and individuals within this site showed differences in habitat selection among years. Habitat selection at the West Coast site also differed between sexes suggesting that males are outcompeting females for prime foraging spots.</p> <p>Overall, my results indicate that foraging conditions on the West Coast are highly variable likely due to rising sea surface temperatures, marine heatwaves, and the effects of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation. As a result, it is likely that prey availability on the West Coast is unpredictable causing high variation in foraging behaviour and sexual foraging segregation. With climate change, foraging conditions on the West Coast are predicted to get more unpredictable as sea surface temperatures continue to rise and extreme weather events become more frequent. These factors will make foraging increasingly difficult for Westland petrels and could see them rely more on fishery discards as a source of food, increasing their risk of incidental mortality. Conservation management should focus on protecting the petrels core foraging area around the Hokitika canyon to help limit the effects of climate change. Fishery management should also focus on limiting or prohibiting offal discards to prevent the incidental mortality of Westland petrels.</p>

Abstract Predatory social wasps are well studied in several aspects; however, foraging behaviour, especially that which takes place away from the nest at often unpredictable locations, or specialized behaviours to find and subdue prey are not well understood. In the Brazilian tropical savanna, the Polistinae wasp Brachygastra lecheguana is specialized in preying on some endophytic weevil larvae which develops inside floral buds. We hypothesized that these wasps utilize a combination of different mechanisms such as visual, chemical (odour) and possible tactile cues to find the weevil larvae. Using a combination of experimental manipulations (visual; chemical; visual/chemical) we tested the wasp’s ability to detect the endophytic larvae in the field. Additionally, we checked the ability of this wasp to detect vibrations produced by the weevils inside the buds. Our results suggest that the B. lecheguana wasp utilizes a sequence of eco-physiological mechanisms to find the endophytic larva inside floral buds: sight, smell, and perhaps touch. The use of multiple cues by this wasp guarantees such a high rate of predation on endophytic beetles that the wasp may have positive implications (reduction in weevils’ infestation) for the future of the host plant’s reproduction.

Environmental variability during the development of an organism has known impacts on the expression of certain behavioural patterns. We used the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster to investigate how different environmental conditions interact with the allelic variants of rover (forR) and sitter (fors) at the foraging locus to affect food-related behaviour of larvae. We discovered that larval density and nutrient availability were key environmental factors affecting the larval behaviour during early development. High larval density decreased the tendency of rovers to leave a food patch and reduced their travelled path lengths, such that rovers and sitters showed no more significant differences regarding their behaviour. Similar results were obtained when starving the larvae. Furthermore, cutting the availability only of specific nutrients such as sugar, fat or protein during development all affected larval foraging behaviour and locomotion.

Overall foraging success and ultimate fitness of an individual animal is highly dependent on their food-searching strategies, which are the focus of foraging theory. Considering the consistent inter-individual behavioural differences, personality may have a fundamental impact on animal food-scratching behaviour, which remains largely unknown. In this study, we aimed to investigate how personality traits (i.e., boldness and exploration) affect the food-scratching behaviour and food intake of the domestic Japanese quail Coturnix japonica during the foraging process. The quails exhibited significant repeatability in boldness and exploration, which also constituted a behavioural syndrome. More proactive, that is, bolder and more explorative, individuals scratched the ground more frequently for food and began scratching earlier in a patch. Individuals that scratched more frequently had a longer foraging time and a higher food intake. The correlation between personality traits and temporary food intake during every 2 min varied over time and was sex dependent, with females exhibiting a positive correlation during the first half of the foraging stage and males after the initial stage. These findings suggest that personality traits affect the food-scratching behaviour and, thus, the food intake of quails. Our study provides insights into the impact of personality traits on animal’s foraging behaviour by influencing their food-searching strategies.
