Abstract A near-perfect absorber for the visible regime based on metal-dielectric-metal subwavelength grating structure with the refractory metals is designed and demonstrated numerically. The absorber presents an average absorption over 98.4% in the visible regime at normal incidence. Angle-relative analysis shows that the proposed structure has good angle-tolerance. The high average absorption (86.6%) in the visible region can be maintained with the incident angles up to 60°. Through the analysis of the magnetic field, the physical origin is verified that this excellent absorption performance mainly stems from the cooperative effect of surface plasmonic resonances and the intrinsic broadband spectral responses by the refractory metals. In addition, the dependence of the absorption spectrum of the proposed absorber on the structural parameters is analyzed. This work provides an idea for the design of high-performance absorbers and has potential applications in advanced light energy capture and integration systems.

AbstractA highly dispersive, diffractive optical element is designed and realized for an extremely high spectral resolution spectroscopy for exoplanet telescope application. Our design uses an annular Fresnel hologram to transform incident starlight directly into a spectrogram. The recording of the hologram is accomplished using two spherical waves of different radius of curvature. The resultant hologram consists of an annular grating structure with a gradually shrinking period as a function of increasing radius. The variable period not only could bring the incoming star-light into focus, but also exhibits a large on-axis chromatic behavior. We demonstrate a dispersion of wavelength 430–700 nm over 190 mm on-axis distance, leading to a super fine spectral resolution 0.0266 nm at wavelength 515 nm for a detector size of 20 µm.

Ordered and patterned micro/nanostructure arrays have emerged as powerful platforms for optoelectronic devices due to their unique ordered-dependent optical properties. Among various structures, grating structure is widely applied because of its simple fabrication process, easy adjusting of size and morph, and efficient light trapping. Herein, we summarized recent developments of light management with grating structures in optoelectronic devices. Typical mechanisms about the grating structures in optoelectronic devices have been reviewed. Moreover, the applications of grating structures in various optoelectronic devices have been presented. Meanwhile, the remaining bottlenecks and perspectives for future development have been discussed.
