Background: Migraine is associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). There are evidences that components of MetS are more prevalent among migraine patients than non migraineurs. Since both migraine and MetS are associated with a high risk of cardiovascular events, it is likely that the parameters of MetS increase the occurrence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in migraineurs. The present research project was conducted for the purpose of investigating the relationship between MetS parameters and different items of migraine headaches. Methods: This descriptive-analytical, cross-sectional study was performed on 240 migraineurs [according to International Headache Society (HIS) II criteria] within the 17+ age range. The participants were selected via consecutive and convenience sampling method. The evaluated parameters for each subject included 2 arms: migraine characteristics (intensity, frequency of attacks, subtype, duration, and treatment regimen) and indices of MetS according to the National Cholesterol Education Program’s Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP-III) report criteria [high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (‎HDL-C), triglyceride (TG), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), height, waist circumference (WC), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP), and body mass index (BMI)]. All data were analyzed in SPSS software. Results: Total prevalence of MetS was 16.25% (39 patients). There was a statistically meaningful relationship between hypertriglyceridemia and gender (P = 0.021), hypertriglyceridemia and prophylactic antimigraine regimen (P = 0.022), hyperglycemia and age group (P = 0.010), hyperglycemia and the intensity of headache (P = 0.048), hyperglycemia and prophylactic treatment (P = 0.001), systolic hypertension and migraine subtype (P = 0.004), systolic hypertension and the duration of migraine disease (P = 0.005), diastolic hypertension and migraine subtype (P = 0.002), WC and gender (P = 0.001), WC and the intensity of headache (P = 0.028), WC and prophylactic medication (P = 0.017), HDL and gender (P = 0.001), HDL and the prophylactic regimen (P = 0.023), and MetS and gender (P = 0.005). The prevalence of MetS was increased with increase in the severity of migraine headache. Conclusion: Due to the relative increase in the prevalence of MetS in patients with more severe migraine, an evaluation of the mechanisms of MetS is recommended in this population.

Relevance. Viral diseases can significantly reduce the yield of stone fruit crops. More than 30 viruses have been characterized on stone fruits crops, among which the most harmful are Plum pox virus (PPV), Prunus dwarf virus (PDV), Prunus necrotic ringspot virus (PNRSV), Cherry leaf roll spot virus (CLRV), Apple chlorotic leaf spot virus (ACLSV). Viral diseases monitoring is essential for controlling the viruses prevalence and choosing a control strategy. In the absence of healthy plants of a certain variety, health improvement is carried out using laboratory methods, including thermotherapy. Sanitation methods need to be improved in relation to the culture characteristics and the virus type. Of considerable interest is the development of techniques that reduce the viruses concentration when growing stone fruit trees in the field.Methods. During 2016–2020 using the ELISA (“Loewe” diagnostic kits) diagnostics of viruses on varieties and clonal rootstocks of cherry, sweet cherry and plum (660 plants) was carried out in the conditions of the Moscow region. For plant health in 2019–2021 used thermotherapy for 3 months. To study the effect of Pharmayod (“Farmbiomed”) on viruses in open ground, 24 plum plants of 5 varieties were treated with this drug at a concentration of 0.3 ml/l.Results. The total prevalence of viruses on cherries varieties was 44%, sweet cherries — 40%, plums — 59%, on clonal rootstocks — 46, 55 and 56% respectively. The highest incidence of PNRSV and PDV viruses has been established. Cherry plants of 11 varieties, free from the main harmful viruses, 4 varieties of sweet cherries, 12 varieties of plums and 9 forms of clonal rootstocks were revealed. The use of the Pharmayod on plum trees in the open field contributed to a decrease in the infection index of the studied viruses. Plum plants in a heat chamber were characterized by a higher survival rate and growth parameters in comparison with cherry and sweet cherry. After the completion of thermotherapy, a significant decrease in the index of infection in plants was noted.

Objective:Toevaluate the prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) with its associated risk factors among Saudi population in Aljouf, Sakaka, Saudi Arabia. Methods: This is a retrospective hospital based study conducted at King Abdul Aziz specialized hospital Sakaka Aljouf, Saudi Arabia by selecting participants with diagnosed CAD by coronary angiogram, the meanage 55.1 ± 10.8 yrs ( range 35-75-years)over a period ofJanuary 2019to December 2019. Demographic characteristics included age, sex,diabetes, hypertension, smoking and family history of CAD. Laboratory data included such as total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL and HDL levels. Collected data were analyzed by using SPSS 20.00software. Results: One hundred two participants, out of eight hundred fifty five were diagnosed CADwhich included 64.7% stable angina and 35.2% unstable angina. The total prevalence of CAD obtained from this study was11.9% among male and female was7.89% and 4.621% respectively (P<0.0001). Diabetes (85.7%) and dyslipidemia 94.2%weremost important risk factors in female compared to male 59.1% and 62.2% respectively, while hypertension 82% higher in male than female 51.4 % considers as a significant (p<0.001). Smoking considered as an individual risk factor of 94% for male coronary artery disease patients. Conclusion:The prevalence of CAD was higher in male 7.89 % than female 4.21% and its associated risk factors including hypertension and cigarette smoking. Epilepsy is a common chronic neurological disease that manifests as recurrent seizures. The incidence and prevalence of epilepsy in women are slightly lower than those in men. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a reproductive endocrine system disease, is a complication that women with epilepsy are susceptible to, and its total prevalence is 8%–13% in the female population and sometimes as high as 26% in female epilepsy patients. The rate of PCOS increased markedly in female patients who chose valproate (VPA), to 1.95 times higher than that of other drugs. In addition, patients receiving other anti-seizure medications (ASMs), such as lamotrigine (LTG), oxcarbazepine (OXC), and carbamazepine (CBZ), also have reproductive endocrine abnormalities. Some scholars believe that the increase in incidence is related not only to epilepsy itself but also to ASMs. Epileptiform discharges can affect the activity of the pulse generator and then interfere with the reproductive endocrine system by breaking the balance of the hypothalamic–pituitary–ovarian (HPO) axis. ASMs may also cause PCOS-like disorders of the reproductive endocrine system through the HPO axis. Moreover, other factors such as hormone metabolism and related signalling pathways also play a role in it.

An increased lifetime risk of epilepsy has been reported in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) patients, ranging between 4% and 14%. To further analyze the correlation between NF1 and epilepsy, we retrospectively reviewed the epidemiologic, clinical, radiological, and molecular data of 784 unselected patients diagnosed with NF1 and referred to the neurofibromatosis outpatient clinics at the University Hospital of Padua. A crude prevalence of epilepsy of 4.7% was observed. In about 70% of cases, seizures arose in the context of neuroradiological findings, with the main predisposing factors being cerebral vasculopathies and hydrocephalus. In the absence of structural abnormalities, the prevalence of epilepsy was found to be 1.27%, which is approximately equal to the total prevalence in the general population. NF1 patients with seizures exhibit a higher incidence of intellectual disability and/or developmental delay, as well as of isolated learning disabilities. The comparison of causative NF1 mutations between the two groups did not reveal a specific genotype–phenotype correlation. Our data refine the current knowledge on epileptological manifestations in NF1 patients, arguing against the hypothesis that specific mechanisms, inherent to neurofibromin cellular function, might determine an increased risk of epilepsy in this condition.

Abstract Objective: This study aims to evaluate the relationship between serum retinol binding protein levels and sarcopenia in elderly general hospitalized patients. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 682 elderly patients with Barthel-index ≥100 on admission. Sarcopenia was defined according to the recently updated Asian Sarcopenia Working Group 2019 criteria. The skeletal muscle mass index was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Serum prealbumin, albumin, hemoglobin, blood creatinine, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and retinol binding protein are also detected. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between serum RBP levels and sarcopenia, and to adjust for potential confounding factors.Results:There are 105 cases of sarcopenia, 56 males and 49 females. The total prevalence of sarcopenia is 15.40% in general inpatients, of which 16.47% are males and 14.33% are females.For men and women, it was observed that the serum retinol binding protein in sarcopenia patients was significantly lower than that without sarcopenia (24.43±8.12 vs 29.98±9.91, P<0.001) and(23.27±5.13 vs 28.35±6.63, P < 0.001),The fully adjusted model showed that male and female low retinol binding protein participants had a 2.341(1.176,4.660) and 2.911(1.324-6.400) times higher risk of sarcopenia than normal retinol binding protein respectively.Conclusion: Low levels of retinol binding protein are associated with an increased risk of sarcopenia in elderly general hospitalized patients.

Background: Bloodstream infection (BSI) is an increasing public health concern worldwide, representing a serious infection with significant morbidity and mortality, especially in children and the elderly. The predominant microbial distribution and antibiotic susceptibility were investigated among BSIs in the different intensive care units (ICUs)—pediatric ICU (PICU), surgical ICU (SICU), cardiac ICU (CICU), respiratory ICU (RICU), and geriatric ICU (GICU)—in order to achieve more efficient and appropriate therapies for patients in various ICUs.Methods: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, the blood specimens were collected from five different ICUs of Peking University First Hospital and comprehensive ICU of Miyun Teaching Hospital (Miyun ICU) before antimicrobial treatment from 2017 to 2020. Microorganism cultures of the blood samples were conducted, and positive cultures were tested for type of pathogens and drug susceptibility.Results: The prevalence of BSIs was the highest in the Miyun ICU (10.85%), followed by the RICU (9.48%) and the PICU (8.36%). The total prevalence of Gram-positive bacterial strains (especially Staphylococcus spp. and Enterococcus spp.) in the PICU (44.55%), SICU (57.58%), CICU (55.00%), GICU (49.06%), and Miyun ICU (57.58%) was higher than that of Gram-negative bacteria. The major bacterial strain was Acinetobacter baumannii in the PICU (21.82%); Klebsiella pneumoniae in the SICU (12.88%), CICU (30.00%), and RICU (30.39%); Escherichia coli in the GICU (20.75%); and Staphylococcus epidermidis (18.18%) in the Miyun ICU. Staphylococcus hominis of BSIs remained highly susceptible (&gt;70%) to gentamicin, linezolid, daptomycin, teicoplanin, vancomycin, tigecycline, and rifampicin in all the ICUs. Its antibiotic sensitivity to levofloxacin was moderate in the PICU and CICU, but mild (&lt;30%) in the SICU, RICU, and GICU. K. pneumoniae was highly susceptible to doxycycline, minocycline, and tigecycline in all the ICUs except the RICU, and its antibiotic sensitivity to imipenem, meropenem, amikacin, ciprofloxacin, and levofloxacin was high/moderate in the PICU, CICU, GICU, and Miyun ICU, but mild in the SICU and RICU.Conclusion: The current study demonstrated the distribution of prevalent microorganisms, and their antimicrobial susceptibility exhibited a high divergence among BSIs in different ICUs from a tertiary hospital and an outer suburban hospital in Beijing. Therefore, different antibiotic therapies for various wards and distinct age groups (especially between pediatric and elderly patients) should be considered to control the emergence and spread of highly antibiotic-resistant infections.

Relevance. To increase the effectiveness of prevention and treatment protocols, it is above all necessary to consider the activity of caries, especially at the early enamel lesion stage, in the form of a white spot, to make the correct diagnosis based on a clinical examination, which assesses the location, change in surface hardness, symmetry, contour shape, depth, color and opacity of the lesion. Different causes of superficial enamel discoloration, in the form of white spots, are paramount for the restorative treatment as the quality of the enamel preparation affects the marginal fit and the durability of the restoration. However, poor oral hygiene, disturbance in eating behavior affect the course of non-carious hard-tissue diseases, which caries may complicate. Purpose – to optimize the diagnosis of initial dental enamel lesions to improve the caries prevention quality.Materials and methods. The study examined 460 children living in the Central and Krasnoselsky districts of St. Petersburg. The following indices assessed hard tissue condition: OHI-S, Greene and Vermillion; OHI by O'Leary T., Drake R., Naylor; White spot lesions index, Gorelick L, Geiger A. M, Gwinnett A. J., DMFT and df; caries activity.Results. The total prevalence of superficial (initial) lesions of hard tissues was 37.82%, i.e. 174 people out of 460 examined patients had superficial enamel lesions according to the criteria of I and II categories. The study found enamel changes in the age groups: 5-6 years (130) – 36 people (27.69%); 12 years old (175) – 62 people (35.42%); 15 years old (155) – 76 people (49.03%).Conclusions. Focusing on the caries activity signs rather than a precise differential diagnosis of the lesion nature is necessary to provide well-timed treatment and prevention upon detecting initial enamel lesion at a dental check-up.

Abstract Parasitic mite infections are very common on virtually all organisms including tree geckos. This research was aimed to determine the species and prevalence of parasitic mites infecting tree lizards in Purwokerto, Central Java. This research employed a survey method with a purposive random sampling technique. One hundred individuals of tree lizards were obtained from trees in 4 different sub-districts in Purwokerto. The results showed that from 3 species of tree geckos namely, Hemidactylus platyurus, H. frenatus and H. garnotii, only the last one was not infected by parasitic mites. The prevalence of parasitic mites in H. garnotii was 0%, while in H. frenatus and H. platyurus were 27% and 29%, respectively. The total prevalence of parasitic mites on tree geckos in Purwokerto, Central Java, was 28%. The results showed that there were 5 (five) species of parasitic mites belonging to the genus Geckobia, namely G. keegani, G. gleadovania, G. turkestana, G. simplex and G. diversipilis. The prevalence of G. gleadovania in H. frenatus geckos was 100%, while in H. platyurus geckos, the prevalence of infection by G. diversipilis was also 100%. The most infected body part was the trunk where the prevalence was 57%.

We explored the association between serum uric acid (SUA) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) and insulin resistance (IR) among health personnel from a public hospital in Peru in a cross-sectional study with data from the Plan for the Prevention and Surveillance of Communicable and Noncommunicable Diseases of Huaycán Hospital. MetS was defined according to Latin American Diabetes Association (ALAD) criteria and IR with surrogate IR markers, triglyceride-to-HDL-C ratio (TG/HDL-C), and triglyceride-to-glucose index (TyG). The association between SUA and MetS and IR was determined using Poisson regression models in a sample of 292 participants with an average age of 46.2 ± 10.6 years. The total prevalence of MetS was 38%, and the individuals with MetS presented mainly alterations in anthropometric parameters (obesity and body fat). Finally, the adjusted regression models showed that women with SUA in the highest tertile increased the prevalence of MetS (PR: 1.71, 95% CI: 1.07–2.74) compared to the lowest tertile of SUA in women, while SUA increased hypertriglyceridemia and IR (TG/HDL-C and TyG) in both sexes. We concluded that SUA is strongly associated with MetS in women, and SUA increases hypertriglyceridemia and IR in both sexes. On the contrary, more research is required regarding the female population.
