Abstract The influence of the reflected waves at the bonding boundary on the resonance waveform and temperature characteristics was investigated using α-quartz (QZ). The double-layered resonator specimen was fabricated using 129.55°Y- and 0°Y-cut QZ substrates with the thickness ratio x=0.520. The temperature characteristic at the range from 100°C to 300°C was deviated from the calculated values estimated by the equations considering thickness and electric flux density ratio proposed in the previous work, and the resonant waveform of the specimen was deteriorated as compared with that of single-layer resonators. In order to clarify these phenomena, the phase matching conditions and total amplitude in the specimen were examined. As a result, it was clarified that increase of the amplitude in the layer with lower acoustic impedance was affected to the temperature characteristic, and acoustic losses due to reflection / transmission at the bonding boundary was affected to the total amplitude of resonance.

We propose a simple anomaly detection method that is applicable to unlabeled time series data and is sufficiently tractable, even for non-technical entities, by using the density ratio estimation based on the state space model. Our detection rule is based on the ratio of log-likelihoods estimated by the dynamic linear model, i.e. the ratio of log-likelihood in our model to that in an over-dispersed model that we will call the NULL model. Using the Yahoo S5 data set and the Numenta Anomaly Benchmark data set, publicly available and commonly used benchmark data sets, we find that our method achieves better or comparable performance compared to the existing methods. The result implies that it is essential in time series anomaly detection to incorporate the specific information on time series data into the model. In addition, we apply the proposed method to unlabeled Web time series data, specifically, daily page view and average session duration data on an electronic commerce site that deals in insurance goods to show the applicability of our method to unlabeled real-world data. We find that the increase in page view caused by e-mail newsletter deliveries is less likely to contribute to completing an insurance contract. The result also suggests the importance of the simultaneous monitoring of more than one time series.

Abstract. GNSS radio occultation (RO) plays an important role in ionospheric electron density inversion and sounding of sporadic E layers. As the China's first electromagnetic satellite, China Seismo Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES) has collected the RO data from both GPS and BDS-2 satellites since March 2018. In this study, we extracted the carrier to noise density ratio (CNR) data of CSES and calculated the standard deviation of normalized CNR. A new criterion is developed to determine the Es events, that is when the mean value of the absolute value of the difference between the normalized CNR is greater than 3 times of the standard deviation. The statistics show that sporadic E layers have strong seasonal variations with highest occurrence rates in summer season at middle latitudes. It is also found that the occurrence height of Es is mainly located at 90–110 km, and the period of local time 15:00–18:00 is the high incidence period of Es. In addition, the geometric altitudes of a sporadic E layer detected in CSES radio occultation profiles and the virtual heights of a sporadic E layer obtained by the Wuhan Zuo Ling Tai (ZLT) ionosonde show four different space-time matching criterions. Our results reveal that there is a good agreement between both parameters which is reflected in the significant correlation.

Key physiological traits of plants, such as transpiration and stomatal conductance, are usually studied under steady-state conditions or modeled using only a few measured data points. Those measurements do not reflect the dynamic behavior of the plant in response to field conditions. To overcome this bottleneck, we used a gravimetric functional phenotyping platform and a reverse-phenotyping method to examine the dynamic whole-plant water regulation responses of tomato introgression lines and compared those responses with several years of yield performance in commercial fields. Ideotype lines had highly plastic stomatal conductance and high abaxial to adaxial stomatal density ratios and the size of their stomatal apertures peaked early in the day under water-deficit conditions. These traits resulted in dynamic daily water-use efficiency, which allowed for the rapid recovery of transpiration when irrigation was resumed after a period of imposed drought. We found that stomatal density, the abaxial to adaxial stomatal density ratio and the time of maximum stomatal apertures are crucial for plant adaptation and productivity under drought stress conditions. Abaxial stomatal density was also found to be strongly correlated with the expression of the stomatal-development genes SPCH and ZEP. This study demonstrates how a reverse functional phenotyping approach based on field yield data, continuous and simultaneous whole plant waterbalance measurements and anatomical examination of individual leaves can help us to understand and identify dynamic and complex yield-related physiological traits.

Due to a favourable strength-to-density ratio, aluminium and its alloys are increasingly used in the automotive, aviation and space industries for the fabrication of skins and other structural elements. This article explores the opportunities for and limitations of using Single- and Two Point Incremental Sheet Forming techniques to form sheets from aluminium and its alloys. Incremental Sheet Forming (ISF) methods are designed to increase the efficiency of processing in low- and medium-batch production because (i) it does not require the production of a matrix and (ii) the forming time is much higher than in conventional methods of sheet metal forming. The tool in the form of a rotating mandrel gradually sinks into the sheet, thus leading to an increase in the degree of deformation of the material. This article provides an overview of the published results of research on the influence of the parameters of the ISF process (feed rate, tool rotational speed, step size), tool path strategy, friction conditions and process temperature on the formability and surface quality of the workpieces. This study summarises the latest development trends in experimental research on, and computer simulation using, the finite element method of ISF processes conducted in cold forming conditions and at elevated temperature. Possible directions for further research are also identified.

Over the last three decades, traffic crashes have been one of the leading causes of fatalities and economic losses in the U.S.; compared with other age groups, this is especially concerning for the youth population (those aged between 16 and 24), mostly due to their inexperience, greater inattentiveness, and riskier behavior while driving. This research intends to investigate this issue around selected Florida university campuses. We employed three methods: (1) a comparative assessment for three selected counties using both planar Euclidean Distance and Roadway Network Distance-based Kernel Density Estimation methods to determine high-risk crash locations, (2) a crash density ratio difference approach to compare the maxima-normalized crash densities for the youth population and those victims that are 25 and up, and (3) a logistic regression approach to identify the statistically significant factors contributing to young-driver-involved crashes. The developed GIS maps illustrate the difference in spatial patterns of young-driver crash densities compared to those for other age groups. The statistical findings also reveal that intersections around university areas appear to be significantly problematic for youth populations, regardless of the differences in the general perspective of the characteristics of the selected counties. Moreover, the speed limit countermeasures around universities could not effectively prevent young-driver crash occurrences. Hence, the results of this study can provide valuable insights to transportation agencies in terms of pinpointing the high-risk locations around universities, assessing the effectiveness of existing safety countermeasures, and developing more reliable plans with a focus on the youth population.

Abstract In order to reduce the dependence of accuracy on the number of grids in the Ausas cavitation algorithm, a modified Ausas algorithm was presented. By modifying the mass-conservative Reynolds equation with the concept of linear complementarity problems (LCPs), the coupling of film thickness h and density ratio θ disappeared. The modified equation achieved a new discrete scheme that ensured a complete second-order-accurate central difference scheme for the full film region, avoiding a hybrid-order-accurate discrete scheme. A journal bearing case was studied to show the degree of accuracy improvement and the calculation time compared to a standard LCP solver. The results showed that the modified Ausas algorithm made the asymptotic and convergent behavior with the increase of nodes disappear and allowed for the use of coarse meshes to obtain sufficient accuracy. The calculation time of the modified Ausas algorithm is shorter than the LCP solver (Lemke's pivoting algorithm) for middle and large scale problems.

Modern low-cost electronic devices can achieve high precision for global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) and related applications. Recently, the pseudo-range and carrier phase have been directly obtained from a smartphone to establish a professional-level surveying device. Although promising results have been obtained by linking to an external GNSS antenna, the real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning performance requires further improvement when using the embedded smartphone antenna. We first investigate the observation quality characteristics of the Xiaomi Mi 8 smartphone. The carrier-to-noise-density ratio of L5/E5a signals is below that of L1/E1 signals, and the cycle slip and loss of lock are severe, especially for L5/E5a signals. Therefore, we use an improved stochastic model and ambiguity-resolution strategies to improve the short-baseline RTK positioning accuracy. Experimental results show that the ambiguity fixing rate can reach approximately 90% in 3 h of observations when using the embedded antenna, while the GPS/Galileo/BDS single-frequency combination is more suitable for smartphones. On the other hand, convergence takes 10–30 min, and the RTK positioning accuracy can reach 1 and 2 cm along the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively, if ambiguity is resolved correctly. Moreover, we verify the feasibility of using a mass-produced smartphone for deformation monitoring. Results from a simulated dynamic deformation experiment indicate that a smartphone can recognise deformations as small as 2 cm.
