Cancer

Cancer develops when cells grow out of control and form tumors due to damage to DNA that causes mutations. Cancer cells multiply uncontrollably and can interfere with normal body functions. Treatment options include chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery to stop cancer cell growth and division. Cancer occurs due to genetic mutations from external factors like smoking or random chance that alter proteins and cause abnormal cell growth.

Cancer develops when cells in a part of the body

begin to grow out of control. Although there are many kinds of cancer, they all start because of out-of-control growth of abnormal cells. Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. Cancerous cells are also called malignant cells.

Cancer cells develop because of damage to DNA. This

substance is in every cell and directs all its activities. Most of the time when DNA becomes damaged the body is able to repair it. In cancer cells, the damaged DNA is not repaired. People can inherit damaged DNA, which accounts for inherited cancers. Many times though, a persons DNA becomes damaged by exposure to something in the environment, like smoking.

Cancer harms the body when damaged cells divide

uncontrollably to form lumps or masses of tissue called tumors (except in the case of leukemia where cancer prohibits normal blood function by abnormal cell division in the blood stream). Tumors can grow and interfere with the digestive, nervous, and circulatory systems, and they can release hormones that alter body function.

Cancer treatment includes chemotherapy,

radiation, and surgery.

Cancer is a genetic disease. Mutations in genes result in altered proteins During cell division External agents Random event Most cancers result from mutations in somatic cells Some cancers are caused by mutations in germline cells
